Running 360 Games Of An External Usb Driver... How?
« on: March 07, 2010, 04:04:00 AM »

Hi,

SOrry for the question if it is indeed a n00b one, but I am having trouble finding this information.

What I need to know is how do you take an xbox360 game .iso and have it run off an external USB drive.

I have a read around, and have formatted the external drive to FAT32.

I have some iso's ready, now what?

As I understand it they have to be in extracted with some tool, and then placed into a /Games/ directory on the external HDD.

Note: The ISOs i have are already off the DVDs and are located locally on my pc. So the tool must extract from this or whatever and convert to whatever format the 360 needs?

Any help would be appreciated.

I am currently running xexmenu on the 360 and would love for these games to magically appear there when I plug the drive into the xbox. Also is it possible to not have to use xexmenu and have the games appear in the 360 dash?

Sorry if these questions are n00b etc but I have had some real issues finding the specific information I need.

Thanks again

Is this not possible? Do I need to get a new internal HD for the xbox and install there. The current one I have is only 20gig in sixe biggrin.gif A really old xbox.

Ok if I do need to get an internal HD, can you point me to tools to copy the contents of my old drive so I keep my achievements and settings, and maybe point to some good guides on how to swap the drives etc?

Cheers.

you need to have a jtagged xbox, if you do then you just need to extract the ISO's onto the hard drive and run it from xexmenu/freestyle or something of the sort, or convert them to a GOD

He has a JTAG system, mentioned using XexMenu.

Jay - easy answer; use a tool on your PC to "extract" the ISO into a folder. I use extract-xiso but I use Linux, so I dunno what you should look for. You'll want your hard drive formatted as FAT32, NOT NTFS. Toss it into your drive, under the Games directory - so if your USB drive is E:\ and you're unpacking, say, Borderlands, you'll want E:\Games\Borderlands\bunch-of-files-here

Also, I'd suggest Freestyle. It's better in so many ways it's not funny, except it doesn't support HFS+ (if you don't know what it is you don't need it)..

Though personally, I'd recommend backing up all of your drive contents using FTP, and tearing down your 360's drive cradle, replacing it with a bigger drive (mine's a 500gb drive) and formatting THAT with your 360 - though to get XBOX1 games running again you'll have to do some extra stuff I won't go into here.

Hi, I do have a jtagged xbox.

I took the ISOs and converted them to cods, but they are not recognised in xexmenu. How do CODs work with xexmenu, where do you place them on the external drive, and is there anything you need to do to them after?

I have taken some off my own DVD and ripped those directly via xexmenu and they work perfectly.

You mention getting some software to extract the files from the ISOs, which program do you recommdend?

Download a program called Xbox Image Browser. Create a folder on your external hard drive and make the name the game you are going to extract. Now open Xbox Image Browser and open the xbox game iso within the program. Extract the iso to the folder you created on your hard drive. Delete the System update folder to prevent accidentally updated your xbox. Plug your external hard drive into your xbox 360 console.

Turn on your xbox and open xex menu. Go to your external hard drive and you should see the folder you just created. Open the folder and you should see a file named default.xex. Play default.xex and the game should play.

I create a separate folders for each game and put them all on my external hard drive. So when I open xexmenu I see a list of all my games.

You can also use quickboot and make a shortcut to the game and put it on your xbox hard drive in the content games folder. Then you should see the list of games from the dashboard. I haven't tried this method yet because I don't mind opening xexmenu.

You can also use this method with a usb stick and put a game or two on it depending on the size of the usb stick.

To play arcade titles you need to copy the arcade game folder to your external hard drive and then copy and paste it you your xbox hard drive to the content 000000 folder. You can do this through xexmenu also. After doing this you should see the arcade games on your dashboard under games library.
