360 Modification USB Drive v1.6 Revision 3
« Reply #75 on: July 14, 2009, 11:29:00 PM »

I can't for the life of me get this to flash my stock Samsung MS25 drive, running an Asus A8V deluxe which uses the VIA VT8237 controller. It can dump and modify the firmware fine, but nothing happens during erase and write even after power cycling the drive.

Oddly enough MS28 drives stock and modded dump and flash just fine.

*IDE cables unplugged
*Promise adaptor disabled
*Using SATA port 1 (bottom black)
*SATA bootloader disabled in bios
*Xbox on before PC (tried both ways: MS28 only dumps and flashes for me this way, MS25 dumps both ways.)

I have managed to do the first tutorial, and even successfully booted from my USB, but now there is a new problem, when it asks me what is my VIA VT6421 number or something, I dont know what to do. I know there is the second tutorial, but when I go in device manager, I have insted of SCSI and RAID controllers writen storage controlers. When I open it there is no VIA controler there are just 4 others. I triedd to find out what that VIA controller actualy is on google but I havent fount enything that would help me. If enyone knows what can I do if meybe I could use a nother controler or something plese let me know.

Frosty i was trying my first liteon drive and it was going fine then when it got to the part where i erases the drive my computer just turned off and rebooted. I looked at the back up key and it is only 1kb. I tried to flash it again and it went through the whole process and seemed like it worked then i checked the dumped files again now they still all have 1kb except the ixtreme file is normal 256kb. Is there any way to recover the original key or did i just get a strange glitch that bricked it?

Your drive might have been bricked... does it work at all? (ejecting, playing original games on your 360)

This is the main reason why I really want to discontinue the CD version.

The CD version heavily relies on a 'broken' NTFS driver, IMHO.

Meaning that the NTFS driver that I use (which was not developed by me) only works correctly about 50% of the time. This only applies to saving the firmware though, not modifying the drive (because the firmware files being used to modify your drive are kept in your PC's RAM until the process is complete). However, if you are unlucky enough to have it fail during modification, and also have the NTFS driver create 1kb files on your NTFS HDD, then you might be out of luck... sad.gif

PLEASE IF ANYONE OUT THERE IS THINKING ABOUT USING THE CD VERSION, PLEASE PLEASE RECONSIDER, AND USE THE USB VERSION INSTEAD, OR YOU RISK POSSIBLY BRICKING YOUR DRIVE IF IT FAILS FOR ANY REASON.

THE USB VERSION WORKS PERFECTLY FOR PROPERLY BACKING UP FIRMWARE FILES AND FLASHING DRIVES, BUT THE CD VERSION HAS KNOWN ISSUES - AVOID USING THE CD VERSION IF YOU CAN.

I regret to say that the CD version may not get a new release. The new version is not working as expected, and I am uncomfortable releasing it.

If you NEED the CD version, just use '360 Modification Disc v1.6'.

Otherwise, I HEAVILY recommend using '360 Modification USB Drive v1.6 Revision 3' if you are able to, as I know it works exactly as designed, and does what it's supposed to properly.

Using xtractor pro with xtractor spear, I get to the beginning, power on, eject, power off, push in half way, put spear where it goes, hit yes and then it always says "dvd-key is invalid!". Am I missing something? everything is hooked up correctly...

Thanks in advance!

Frosty,
I am wanting to flash a lite on 74850C AOA2 drive with your software,i have a CK3 pro and probe.
But i have a question,am i correct in saying that i need a serial cable instead of a usb cable to flash with your mod drive software?

Kudos by the way. And thanks!    biggrin.gif

Indeed, you will need to use the serial cable port on your CK3.

My software doesn't support USB cables. sad.gif

hey frosty, just thought i'd let you know that the tutorials are broken for people who use a case specific OS like linux. the 'FILES' folder should be named 'files'
looks like a nice build though. you should make a gui to create the disk automatically, like iprep style.

btw with the usb adapters, is there a driver for dos/freedos for pl2303 devices? i know there is a usb driver... might be worth looking into.
or how about a linux based boot disk, linux supports usb gear, and now there are flashing programs for it.

Do you mean they are broken for 'creating' the USB drive under Linux?

Because the case doesn't matter under DOS (which is what the software is designed to run under)...

The tutorials are meant to be viewed under the included DOS operating system, and scripted automatically...

Also, about the PL2303... is that the USB/serial chipset used by CK3 adapters? I'm not sure myself...

nahh i mean the actual html files don't display the images because the "FILES" folder is capital, but your htmls has the image locations in lower case.
not that it matters, not many people will be reading it from linux. and those who are will probably be able to work it out.
yeah I think thats the chip in the ck3.. i think its the most common usb>serial chip

have you got much linux experience? it would probably be quite easy to compile a small linux kernel and filesystem (with usb>serial adapter support) to boot off usb and run a flashing script. in fact i am surprised it hasn't already been done.

Oh, I see, you meant the actual tutorials for creating your USB drive are broken under Linux, that's an easy fix. Thanks for the heads up!

I am pretty comfortable with Linux, but AFAIK there is no 'DosFlash' application (or equivalent) for flashing BenQ/Samsung/Hitachi drives. The only Linux application that I know of only supports Lite-On drives.

But yes, I agree, a Linux-based flashing script would be awesome. happy.gif

I will also look into the PL2303, I know there are DOS drivers, I would just need to test the functionality with a CK3 Pro. Now I just have to find one, lol!

*** DOUBLE POST ***

Update!

I've finally finished the disc-based version, and it's a lot more reliable now, and it even has new graphical menus!

Look for the release on the Xbox-Scene main page later tonight!

Changes in v1.6 Revision 2:

 - Replaced HIMEM.SYS with FDXXMS.SYS (better memory management)
 - Typo fixed in HTML code (thanks yaywoop!)
 - General code cleanup on all scripts
 - Powerpoint-style GUI added
 - Disclaimer screen added

Thanks for the reply frosty,
Does this version have the 1.6 firmware from the repack firmware package?

Thanks alot!

Indeed it does.

The iXtreme firmware files for Samsung/BenQ/Lite-On are the correct versions. happy.gif

I've done multiple drives with this software and IT ROCKS!

Thanks so much because it cant get any easier than this.

(figured out what I did wrong the first time and it was my mistake, not frosty's mod)

You can use FAT32 just fine, but you HAVE to use the MS-DOS boot files.

So just follow the tutorial, and use FAT32 instead of FAT, and use MS-DOS instead of FreeDOS. happy.gif
