HddHackr v1.00 Build 20090523
« Reply #60 on: May 26, 2009, 05:25:00 PM »

ok, well I got the 160 gb drive (WD1600BEVS-08RS) to work finally.  It never would take with hddhackr 1.0, but I did manage to do it with 0.91.  I got it to work with the VIA 6421 controller card I have.  As for the 120 gb drive (WD1200BEVS-00UST0), neither hddhackr 1.0 or 0.91 worked.  1.0 gave me the error message "Firmware revision does not match" and 0.91 told me "Fatal Error, the EC bios string was not found in the FW".  Any ideas on how to get the 120gb drive working?  I'm seeing problems with this one around the boards, but some claimed they've gotten it to work.

This program does do its job, but the auto detection is a little wonky. I cannot vouch for the new 1.0, but for 0.91 I highly recommend you manually hex edit the program as various guides will instruct, and inject your sata controllers memory address directly. Worked first time no problem after I did this. Very easy if you have one of the VIA 6421 PCI cards, that should be standard fair in any modders toolbox by now.

Also, not to press the issue too hard, but you cannot be using a laptop as your modding machine. There's far too many customized hardware options for homemade utilities to work like clockwork. You NEED a desktop rig with a mainstream motherboard by a reputable manufacturer. (Asus, MSI, etc) It does not fall to the homebrew developer to accommodate your every need and whim.

I've got an ABIT AW9D-MAX board with a Via 6421 controller card.  I DID manually edit the hex values in 0.91 and it found my drive immediately.  The 120 gb UST drive though failed everything I tried - and I tried everything I could think of plus everything I read over the course of 3 days.  NOTHING worked.  Really frustrating.

I have already tried hddhackr 0.91, and it doesn't even detect my WD drive sad.gif

It says, "No drives detected in Enhanced mode, Now searching in Legacy Mode" and then shows me something like....put nr number from 1 to 4 (x for exit) or something like that.  Tried pressing from 1 to 4, but nothing happens, and then ultimately had to press x to exit.

Guys...any suggestions ?

Got mine to work on Via card using old version 0.91b, Flashed said successful, then rebooted said needed to be flashed again, i just took the drive and tried to format it on the xbox anyway. It WORKED, now using a transfer kit to get 20gb data onto this puppy!

Hope you find the same luck i did

I sounds like I'm gonna need to wait for this to get a little more noob friendly.

It's actually a *lot* more friendly than it was before. I think the stumbling block for many users is their hardware. Not all SATA chipsets are the same and hddhackr seems to work better with certain ones than others. One feature I would love to see added would be external enclosure support via USB (for SATA drives). I'm not sure if it would be possible but if it were it would certainly offer many users an alternative to try if they don't have a desktop that's available.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying - I'm just in a bind because the majority of my friends/family/co-workers all own laptops. I have an older desktop that I dusted off but it has a PCI SATA cards in it (Sil) that both 0.9 and 0.91 didn't work so well with. My laptop was only used because I had exhausted my other options. (Libraries and schools generally frown when users take a part the machine to connect the drive)

Thanks so much.

Has anyone tried rigging up a Raptor drive yet? If all I have to do is get it power and it'll work I definitely need to pick one up.

Hi all. I am new here and am trying to install a western didgital scorpio blue....... model wd3200bevt hard drive. I was having no luck until recently when i found this updated version 1.00. Now my drive registers but at the flashing stage after seeing the info from the hddss.bin file i am using i get that my drive didnt respond and asked do i want to retry continually. I click yes and get the code 0x51. my comp stays locked like this. I am using a hddss.bin from a 120gb hitachi drive according to the info from hddhackr. I have manually edited the hex of hddhackr to represent my values which are currently 8440 8434 according to my msinfo32 (system info).

It's not the this tool that breaks it, it's the method you use to transfer the partition. Took me several attempts to finally get mine working. I would recommend using Datel's Xport 360 software instead of Xplorer360, as it's a lot more reliable detecting all the partitions correctly, and I'd go so far as to say it's about twice as fast injecting and extracting files. After tinkering for hours wiping and restoring files trying to get the backwards compatibility to work, I finally discovered the following method. This has worked for me several times now, successfully using this system for a few of my friend's new HDDs:

1) Used Xport 360 to make an image backup of my original 20gig HDD.
2) Used HDDHackr to install 120gig SS to new WD Bevs drive
3) Used Xport 360 to do a FULL image restore of the 20gig bin image to the 120 gig drive. (Ignore every guide out there that tells you to not todo this) Yes, this will make the drive 20gigs, but only temporarily.
4) Use HDDHackr a second time, and once again apply the 120gig SS to the WD Bevs. This will corrupt the last partition with the 360 save data, but the other partitions including the backwards compatibility section will function 100%
5) Connect WD Bevs to Xbox 360, and use the System menu to format the HDD. This will ONLY format the last partition with the 360 content. It will not touch anything else.
6) Connect  the WD Bevs to your Windows machine again. Manually extract all your 360 content from your 20gig bin image, then manually inject it back into your now freshly formatted partition of the new WD Bevs. Alternatively, if you have it, use the official M$ 360 Transfer Kit to transfer from the 20gig to the 120gig at this stage, since it only transfers that one partition also. This saves some time since it transfer the data in one shot.
Yes you have to jump through hoops, but it does solve the problem. Hope these instructions were clear.

I'd love to see someone's report myself on loading times with a Raptor using NXE hdd installs. I was hoping since day 1 this tool came out they would add support for the WD VR, but when NXE hdd loading was announced, that sealed the deal for me.

Great tutorial. WD Scorpio Blue WD1600BEVT 160 GB works following your guide.

Used HddHack 0.91 and Xport 360.

Thank you very much.
