Xbox As Tv-streaming-client
« on: February 13, 2005, 04:40:00 PM »

Hi,

I'm searching for a solution to be able to watch TV on my Xbox.
My Idea is as follows:

Linux serving with a dvb-s-pci card. I'm not sure, i think theres is a software called vdr. I also know dvbstream but I don't know how to configure the components in detail.

Xbox with Evox and XBMC to be able to receive and (of course) watch the stream (audio AND video).

But  what about switching channels? Is it possible remotely with the xbox (xbmc)?
What about recording to harddisk. Nevermind if the stream is recorded to the linux-server or to the xbox's harddisk.
What about an EPG?

Thanks A LOT in Advance!

supposedly it can be done with videoLAN by setting up live tv on the computer as a stream.  i've seen the main thread on the xbmc forum about it, and followed it, but had been unsuccessful in making it happen.  and being that getting help here on such a specific topic seems impossible, you may be better trying over there.  even then, i was unable to get the support needed to make it work.  good luck.  would love to see you get it working.  for me, thats the last step in making xbmc a complete media center for my needs/wants.

Yeah, i agree with above. I tried VLC with my PVR-250 card, and tried various settings, but couldn't seem to get one that worked. Heard audio, but couldn't seem to properly get video working right. Streamed fine to my other computer though. Might mess around some more with winamp vp6 streaming. That always worked much better. almost the highest setting used for audio and video, and no slowdowns or caching problems. Always did have much better performance and speed and quality using VP6 and winamp shoutcast then using VLC. Some more to setup, but not really that hard. Not recommended for newbies though.

Hi,
I donĀ“t now much about Linux, but this works  great for me. (WinXP)

Xbmc

This version comes with cannel switching.
A little bit more stable, but without channel switching:

DVBN

Enjoy

Since everyone here knows about Digital Video Recording,  what is the best card for a PC if I want to record TV onto my computer. (under $200).

I've looked at some of the WinTV cards and also the AIW 9600XT,but not sure which way to go.
thx.

look on ebay, for windows get a pvr-150, linux get a pvr-200

I use mythtv (linux open source PVR software) with the mythtv XBMC script. This supports live tv(including pausing and time shifting), Recorded programs playback, and Program Guide.

Schedualing of recordings, and commerical skip (myth skips but xbmc does not yet) should be comming eventually. Currently I am using MythWeb (website interface for mythtv) to schedual all my recordings

Now this is not plug and play software. It can be quite a pain in the ass. As long as you are not using SATA drives knopp myth would be your best option. If you dont know you way around a linux console (command line) you are likely going to get stuck really fast.

I have no idea what software for windows works well and has any time shifting, recorded program viewer,  or guide.

Greate,

I'm compiling mythtv right now. Hope it'll work.
But where to get the xbmc-script for controlling mythtv with my xbox?

Thx!

The script is a sf.net project.

Just search for xbmc mythtv it should pop up.

Download the CVS to get it.
I compiled the cvs last night and, and installed the myth script but there is a conflict in the files they include for the skin. I havn't had time to track it down yet.

When I get it fixed up and working ill take some Screenshots if you guys want

Isn't there any good manual especially for this purpose? (Linux-DVB -> MythtV -> Ethernet -> XBMC).
What option is needed for ./configure mythtv with the dvb-s option? It seems to be needed.
Does Mythtv do auto-channel-search? How?
