Dan released a new version of EncodeHD, an application to re-encode all types of video files for use on your home media player [like Xbox360] or on-the-go device. It aims to provide a simple interface with no fuss. From dcunningham.net:

Download is available in the EncodeHD section of the site, and here's what's new since the last release:

NEW: Apple iPod Touch, iPod Classic, iPod 5G, and Sony PSP support
NEW: Output for TV option on all iPods will optimise video for display on TV, instead of the iPod screen
NEW: Command-line options /LOWPRIORITY and /HIGHPRIORITY changes the encoding process priority
NEW: RM filetype added to filemask
CHANGE: Removed Quality slider. EncHD now chooses the best quality / size based on the input file and target profile
CHANGE: Huge overhaul of the device filtering framework. Thresholds should be properly limited across all files now, so no more unsupported file messages (hopefully!)
CHANGE: Massive internal code restructure and refactoring
CHANGE: Disabled Bug Reporting for the moment until I can figure out a better way of doing this
CHANGE: First run of every version will display the About Box
CHANGE: Improved debugging info
CHANGE: UI Cleanup
CHANGE: Updated FFmpeg to SVN Build 16573
CHANGE: Updated MedaInfo to 0.7.9
CHANGE: If bitrate detection fails, fall back on the nominal and then overall bitrates. This should a number of issues with file detection
FIX: Advanced flags like "-map" failed, due to a parameter sequencing issue
FIX: Aspect Ratio was not being maintained if the output device was restricting the resolution
FIX: 4GB+ File Splitting 4GB sometimes didn't work or could create thousands of video segments
FIX: 4GB+ File Splitting wasn't cleaning up temporary files
FIX: Cancelling the encode wouldn't cancel subsequent actions
FIX: During encoding, the ListView wasn't scrollable
FIX: UI drawing on startup wasn't very smooth

mmm i'm getting string to float convertion error or something like that...
.net 2 framework is installed
But i'm using vista 64bits...
anybody got similar problems? or a way to get around these issues??

At the moment I'm not very pleased with the resulting video file. I re-encoded a 720p .mkv file using the x-box 360 profile hoping that this would be a more simple way than using the tutorial already posted on here using TMPGEnc. I didn't adjust any of the default settings using the ffmpeg flags. Maybe with some tweaking I will have better results. In the meantime I'm sticking with TMPGEnc. I don't mind spending an extra hour of encoding for superior results. Now that I think about it, I don't even know if EncodeHD retains the 5.1 audio. I understand this is still a beta, but if you're encoding HD .mkv files using the default settings the results will most likely be sub par in my experience. On the other hand, this is an excellent idea and I hope to see work continue on this project. I just feel that "EncodeHD" is slightly misleading using the default settings.

Edit: I'm going to try Encode360 for schitzengiggles.

Edit: Apparently Encode360 doesn't support .mkv files. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

LostOne: It's a bug that I missed, affecting locales where , is a decimal (ie, France). I'm working on it, sorry about that.

Flyinghumanoid: I'm afraid 5.1 isn't supported just yet. It's something I'm looking into. Regarding video quality, I'm actively working on various improvements - but it's a time vs quality issue. I could really jack up the quality but at the cost of huge encoding time increases. I figured that the average user would go with the defaults and the die-hards would modify the quality settings using the advanced ffmpeg flags option. I'll look into documenting some of the advanced flags so people who want quality over encoding time can just copy and paste a line into the advanced flags.

Thanks for your efforts. The interface is really simple and straight forward.
If I get this right, then this program is intended for users who are not über encoding freaks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
So, IMO you should focus on a solution where you could simply choose from different predefined settings based on quality versus time or something, and leave the advanced stuff to where it is now.
If you are a hardcore video encoding nerd you will probably just choose another program with a little more flexibility.
Of course I could be wrong and I don't know what your intentions are with this app. Cheers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

Hi DAN!!!

let me just start of by saying many thanks for ur awesome program!!!

i had written this hole story for u about how great ur program was, but my pc just rebooted itself so i lost my 10 minutes of writing, anyway-

IS there some way u could add an option to convert HD MKV to WMV-HD??

as i find wmv-hd to work better with tversity as that im using to stream my movies to my 50 inch plasma..
and i wanna convert my MKV HD movies into wmv-hd and keep the 720P or 1080P as it is so i can see RAMBO shoot an arrow through someone head and see the details.. hehe

i WILL return to this thread and give u more cudos, but its late here in norway its 0710 AM and i really need to hit the bed..

if im ever in ireland i will buy u a bottle of LAPHROIGH for u!!

I dont see the need for anything but tmpgenc xpress and the combined community codec pack. I drop my mkv in tmpgenc, choose wmv output, tweak a few options, and bam...hdwmv with 5.1 audio (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Your missing the whole point wulfie. Its for someone like me who doesn't know about the community codec pack and what options to tweak and why. Do you have any tips instead of pasting a link to a 25 page thread about doing this in tmpgenc express and tweaks?

encodehd doesn't support 5.1 audio 'yet'. I'll still stick with tmpgenc xpress with the community codec pack (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Sorry lads, been ages since I've been on the forums (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Unfortunately, AC3 on the X360 is entirely up to Microsoft. And WMAPro 10 w/WVC1 is entirely down to when the FFmpeg team can reverse engineer it. The former is more likely to happen before the latter, so that's why I've hedged my bets on MP4.

The latest release of EncodeHD retains the simplicity of the earlier betas, but does have the option of putting in your own FFmpeg flags to override the existing.
