Xplorer 360 Backup Image Question

if i have a backup image  and then format my HDD on my 360, will i be able to restore that backup from my PC again? does teh HDD get a new key or anything, i remember something about the 360 signing the HDD with the xbox or something :S, but last time i did that i was on an old 360 so it would get a new key right and then not work?
