That wouldn't be wise of Microsoft..  That would lock out future hardware manufactures unless they issues a dashboard update.  I think the cost savings of switching HDD vendors far outweighs thwarting 300 hackers looking to save $100..

So don't worry, their is no way to check what kind of drive is in the xbox.

Did you read what I posted ? Each drive has its own low level different hardware routines, that can be checked for. One example of such routine is the routine I use in the hddhackr to read/write the firmware with, such routine is different from drive to drive. Secondly, drive contents is different (partition info for example), third: read/write timing CAN be used (lag is irrelevant, the check can be done locally) and then fourth: there's the double serial info that you just can't change. So even if you'd patch all low level hardware routines, copy all partition info and let's assume that the read/write timing will be too difficult to implement, then there's ALWAYS the double serial. So again, you will NEVER be able to defeat all checks and if they want to ban you, they at least can detect your drive by checking for double serials. But again, I highly doubt that MS is going to ban you for using a drive from a competitor.

Everything we do has a risk factor involved. Bottom line is M$ going to lose money from this hack? NO. Is M$ going lose money from banning people from XBL and risk legal action and costs, YES. So with that said I made my choice. I don't think they would even waist the time and effort to bust it, not until we can run ISo from the HD anyways....LOL. So I will buy both, one to have fun with and the other to be lagit. My Hat is off to the "The Specialist" great work indeed. We where the kids who tore stuff apart just to see how it ran and made it better. I still have a TRS80 with a tape drive running......how old am I? If you don't think M$ has generated more sales due to hackers your being naive and don't think for on minute there bean counters don't see it on the bottom line.

Is it possible to extract the hddss.bin from the 360 hard drive using a datel xport or xsata?  I have the 20gb 360 hard drive and would like to try "creating" another hard drive for myself since i have another 20gb hard drive that is compatible with hddhackr software.  i dont have either products (datel xport or xsata) yet.  If i knew I could extract it without having to void my warranty, then i would gladly buy one of them.

I think it depends on how widespread the hack becomes. If it become really widespread and most or alot of people don't buy the 120G Microsoft drive but instead op to buy a WD 120G BEVS drive and make there own after seeing other people using them online that hasn't got banned. Then Microsoft may choose to do something because they are losing a whole lot of profit and there is alot of profit here to lose.

$195 after taxes is hell alot to pay for a 120G drive. Talk about a profit margin!!

Microsoft cost in bulk for 1 - 120G = $50.00

Price for selling 1 - 120G Drive = $179.99

Profit = $129.99 not bad, not bad at all!!

I have a question for you. I used your program on my WD 80G BEVS and it worked perfectly but now I want to revert back my drive to its original state. I said yes to the undo part but I guess I deleted the undo.bin file or copied it off somewhere but now I can't find it anywhere.

So how can I revert my HDDHackr hacked HD back to the original state without the undo.bin file??

Can I use someone else's undo.bin file??

The drive I used is an Western Digital 80G WD800BEVS-00LAT0 Scorpio Drive.

Anyone out there have a undo.bin file for this drive???

You should be able to use someone elses undo file but it has to be for that drive.  maybe it might be possible to edit someones undo file to have the right parameters to make the drive have full capacity.

It´ll be cool just to edit the security sector from our original 20 gig drive to accept the capacity of BEV drives with the original signature of 20gig drive (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) but I´m not a programmer to understand what the 16-22 sector says ... #@$% it!! I really don´t want to spend almost 200$ for drive that will be available in our country maybe in autumn and for this price :-/  somebody from MS should think about that...

They sell it to a distributor. The distributor sells it to the retailer. The retailer sells it to you. Each have their own markup. This is why people are always talking about "cutting out the middle men". MS didn't make a lot of profit on this, although as the consumer we are still getting screwed. I guess it's good that it's an optional device.

If you're going to use somebody elses undo.bin, then make sure you don't write a RST version to a LAT version or the other way around, this will kill your drive.

What you also can do: open a hddss.bin file in a hex editor.  On byte 0x58 you will find the number of sectors. For a 20 gb HDD this will be: 8029 5402. Now change these 4 bytes into: 20DD 5009

Then run the hddhackr with the '-f' command to flash your modified hddss.bin and your drive will be 80 gb. Of couse, this won't work in your x360, since the signature is broken, but it will work again as normal in your PC.

Is there anyway to edit the hddss.bin from the normal 20gb limit on the original HD and change it so it appears as the new 120gb? As ive brought a western digitia 120g bev drive and want to upgrade it?

Just to end any possible trouble before it starts, do NOT ask where to find the "hddss.bin" file here. It contains copyrighted material, and as such is not allowed here.

Anyone asking for the hddss.bin file or posting links/information on where to get the file will be BANNED. This is your first and FINAL warning. This thread will be hard moderated and closely watched. Keep it clean guys!

and other rules as for not requesting software still apply, that includes hddss.bin or others like the Undo file.
It also applies whether you request directly or through some stupid attempt to cover the request.
Anything that looks like an invitation to be sent file will be sanctionned.

soso,

not trying to be contradictory or cause problems, just a question.  I thought that the rules were in reguards to copyrighted material being referenced to on the forums.  Since the undo file is merely the original firmware for the drive, and as far as I know that information is not copyrighted as there is no digital logo like MS has on the hddss.bin, I would think that there would be no problem in discussing this on the forums.

If I am mistaken please forgive me, and I will not mention it again.

Fair to ask,

If it is part of the code of the original product is a no go.
It is part of what you buy and not identified as being freely distributed (on their site or other)
