Whats Best For Streaming .avi With Xp Home?

Hi all, I have winxp home edition service pack 2 with a shed load of .avi's on the hdd. From what I understand so far Tversity is my only option, is this correct? I have already installed it and although music and pictures are fine, movies make the xbox freeze and I have to reboot. Is there an easier way for those of us without media centre pc's to stream, or do I have to struggle on trying to get Tversity to work?
