Basically why is there anything other than read and write?
Well in fact that is all there is, thks for our good friends like redline99 and schtrom you press start when the dvd is in to backup, and press start in the write tab to burn.
That is the result of an evolution where we started by having to do many steps to get to a backup. There is currently only one game I know of that must to be built by pieces and outside Xbox Backup Creator (or schtrom). There are many other things that the bunch of techie power users will want to play with and investigate and it is the reason for all the rest.
Now what is absolutely required for a backup to work as of today is the game partition (called often game.iso) and the security sector (ss.bin).
Now in order to make the DVD as identical as possible to the original dvd, people now often includes other elements that are on the origianl disk like the Disk Manufacturer Information (DMI) and Physical Format Infomation...
All of that is not really used as part of the security measure by the console ( as of today

).
You can google these, they are standard info part of the dvd structure standard.
