360 Media Connect Troubles..
« on: December 04, 2006, 01:35:00 AM »

Hello heres my story. When I first bought my 360 I could get windows media connect to work fine no problem. Then one day it just didnt work after nothing was changed. Then one day a month or two later it started working without anything different being done. Now today about 4 hours ago I could stream media no problem using windows media connect then all of a sudden its not working again once again without making any changed to my network or anything. So I installed the newest windows media player 11 along with Zune to see if either of those would work, no. Zun can see my 360 but my 360 cant see my pc. Also when I installed the newest WMP11 my windows media connect is gone. I tried installing TVersity, and to my surprise my 360 saw it! Although anytime I try to stream anything from it I get an error. Im running Windows SP2 anyone else hear of this problem? I made a topic about this some time ago probably around when it stopped working for the mysterious reason..

Man I wish somebody knew the answer to this because nearly the whole Xbox.com board is having this trouble. I too need help. I've been having this trouble for about  1 month. my windows media player 11 sees the xbox 360 but the 360 won't connect to the p.c. This is BS now.

Well, you guys have gotten farther than me. My 360 has NEVER seen my pc, WMP11 can't see the 360, and Zune won't even install(says I don't have zune software installed when I try to install, ... well no shit). I had media connect 2 awhile back and it recognized the 360 but thats as far as I've ever gotten. The 360 refuses to talk to my pc. It sucks the big one...and the little one. I might try to call support but that probably will be fruitless. Btw, I'm on XPsp2, my 360 gets past the connection type test(its wired) but fails the next one(I think it was the ip address or something). It is complete bs. I followed the instructions to a T.

Wow...I was going through the forum checking all the threads about this and none have any answers posted. I guess the whole 360 multimedia machine is f'n flop. So I guess I gotta hook my comp up to my hdtv/surround system to get some action. Pfft... horsehockey.

ok, here a few things to try.  first off, when you install WMP11 it gets rid of media connect and intergrates it into MP.  to check on this in WMP11,  click the down arrow under library, then go to media sharing.  check to make sure sharing is enabled, and the 360 is showing up and there is a green check mark beside it.   then click the sharing button and make sure music, pictures, and video is check (or check only what you wan tot share. )  make sure the star ratings are what you want along with parental ratings.  click ok.

to be on the safe side, go to the settings blade, then computers on the 360.  go to the windows computer (not the media center computer) and dissconnect it to be on the safe side.

now, go to the media blade, then music, click yes you d/led the software,  and see if your computer shows up.  if not, turn off your firewall.  if you are using windows firewall, go to the controll panel, then security center, and turn it off.  if you have another type of firewall, you'll have to find out how to dissable it.  now try it, if it works, then this is your issue.

i'm not sure right now what ports you need to open, if this fixes any of your problems, hit me back with a reply, and i'll look it up.  I use windows one care live, and it blocks this on my computer...  now the ver 1.5 beta also blocks it, but it has a nice little wizard that will open them for you, but they are still closed by default.

let me know if this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I had trouble installing zune, but then I found out it needed microsoft update service running to work. Then I got zune up and running and went to library>media sharing and tried to enable it and it said the media sharing service was not running. So I went to services in windows and started enabling anything that sounded like it would have something to do with media sharing(since there is no actual "media sharing" service). Well, it worked. But files won't share through zune, only through wmp11 which I have no problem with. My only prob now is...it only works if I'm connected to the internet on my pc and then switch the ethernet from my cable modem to the 360 without turning the pc off. If I'm not connected to the internet 1st the 360 won't recognize the pc....I'm guessing they designed this to work with an internet connected pc only through a router cause this kinda sucks having to play a wired version of musical chairs every time I want share files with the 360. Oh well, at least it works, and I don't have to lug my huge pc over to the tv to get some connectivity, however limited it may be.

check two things....  first is video's checked under WMP11 under media sharing?  Then, what type of files?  the 360 will ONLY play .wmv, nothing else.  and then i have to make sure, do you have the latest updates?
