Xb Stream - Rss Feed Reader For Xbox 360
« on: September 14, 2006, 08:36:00 AM »

After several months of work I've finally released XB Stream.  XB Stream is an rss feed reader for Xbox 360.  You simply need a Windows Xp computer (home, professional or media center) or Windows Vista for this software to work.

XB Stream automatically downloads rss content feeds, converts them into images and displays them in your (meda > pictures > computer) blade of xbox 360.

XB Stream also downloads audio feeds and creates playlists where you can view them from (media > music > computer) blade.

You can now 'browse' your favorite websites directly from your Xbox 360, XB Stream automatically polls feeds and downloads updates for you, so you have the most recent news, gossip and rumors right on your Xbox 360 to view and hear!

You can download here:

http://www.xbstream.com/xbs/

The download is completely free!

Xbox-scene's feed is standard, you can use the url:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/XboxScene

To add it into XBS, double click on the XBS tray icon, and the XBS settings window will open, you can then paste the above url into the software and click the ADD button.  You will be asked if you want to begin downloading the feed, if you choose yes feeds will begin to update immediately; otherwise XBS will wait till the next update (default setting is every 15 mins).

I'd like to say thanks to xbox-scene.  You guys are the first site to post information about my software - and to boot right on the front page.

To xbox-scene moderators:
If you don't mind would it be okay to add your xml feed into XBS as one of the default feeds?

Thanks, another question.... This ROCKS by the way!!!.....How do I clean it up? I deleted all RSS except teamxbox and major nelson pod cast, added xbox-scene, but there is still a bunch of junk (on the 360 screen) that I dont care for.

This sure beats jumping online every day, now I can get caught up sitting my arse on the couch everyday.

Thanks xzenor.  Here's how to delete.

> Likely the XBS Parser is still running if you recently installed the software (within the last hour) - it takes about 2-3 hours to download all of the feeds and audio feeds I set as default in the software.  Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and do a kill task on any process called XBSPARSE.EXE (there can be up to 3 running at anytime), this is required so it doesnt keep downloading any feeds you just deleted and recreating the files/dirs.

> double click on the XBS tray icon.  In the XBS Settings window, click on the feed you want to delete in bottom combo listbox.  Click the DELETE button.  This will delete all feeds and the actual folder for that feed.

> depending on if you have Windows Media Connect, or Windows Media Player 11 it can take up to 20-30 minutes for the actual database it stores the library in to update.  The update is automated by WMP and WMConnect and will auto remove the listing so it doesn't show up on your tv screen/xbox 360.

Or if you have WMP11 installed, open WMP11 for about 30 seconds - 1 minute and the library will update itself.  Sometimes though it still will show the feeds and items on your tv screen.  Allowing 30 minutes usually fixes the issue and the database is completely cleared of all files that no longer exist.

> Also make sure the files are completely deleted (they more then likely are but it doesn't hurt to look).  The feeds are located at: C:\Program Files\XB Stream\XB Stream\  , and sub-directories are located here with the actual name of the feed as the directory name - you can completely delete the entire directory of the feed you removed previously in XBS settings window.

For instance the sub-directory named Kotaku will be there, you can delete the entire folder and all feeds (images and audio, xml data, playlists) will be deleted off your computer.

Thanks PG4, I'm liking this more and more. The UI is easy to use. And as long as it delete's the files as it goes, I have no problem with it. I've gone into my HDD and deleted everything I could. But one wouldn't delete one file, maybe it was updating, I dont know. But I'm very happy with this program so far. I've missed the feeds from my original xbox with XBMC, now I have it back!!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Yeah the program will auto delete feeds, you can set the 'maximum number of feeds to keep' in XBS Settings window.  For instance if you set it to 10 - then only 10 feeds will be retained for each feed, newer feeds will update and older feeds will be auto deleted.  So in your case you will have 10 feeds for Major Nelson's blog (the most recent 10 audio blogcasts), and then the latest 10 feeds for xbox-scene (10 of the most recent text/image feeds).

Regarding the locked file - its probably an audio feed that was being updated during the delete/end task - these typically end up with a message 'file is currently being used' if you try to delete it in windows.  You can delete the file on your next reboot of the computer.

Also, note that you do not have to be logged into your computer for XB Stream to work,  you simply need to have the computer on (it can be idle at the windows logon screen).  This is because XBS runs as a windows nt service - allowing the program to run even before anyone logs into the computer.

I don't really think it's our place to make that call, we just keep the forums clean  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)  You'd want to ask Xantium or HSDEMONZ for the official word.

...though I don't see why anyone would have a problem with it.

Nice work on this app, rendering the RSS feed into an image for streaming to the 360 is just pure genius, a true appropriation of technology (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
