According to the website for Microsoft Windows Media Player 11, the latest Beta features the abilitiy to the stream media (VIDEO, music, and pictures) from any PC to an XBOX 360. This quote appears on the page, "For example, if you have an Xbox 360 or other digital media receiver (DMR), you can use Windows Media Player to stream music, pictures, and videos from your computer to that device."

For some reason, I doubt something as simple as media player, could do so much. There would need to be a huge backend service for that to work, though i will give it a shot.

I reckon theres a catch.

Catch 1: Must be using a 'genuine' copy of XP. So far im out but will work on it...

I have MCE but prefer pro (both genuine) so this would be alright.

I'm guessing when they say you can stream video, they mean wmv and simple mpg codecs which you can already do currently with MCE and the Extender.

I highly doubt that we will be able to watch xvid / divx anytime soon.

any reason you preffer pro? there is a registry hack you can do to MCE to allow it to join domains.

on topic, like someone else said, i'm sure this would require alot of backend coding and will probably require you to be running MCE anyways.

WMP Beta 2 is pure shit. The Media Sharing integration requires you to import your music and videos into WMP's library (which by the way doesn't work most of the time & when it wants to work, it takes too much time importing your music) to be seen by the 360. It's still locked down to only being able to play wmv encoded videos on the 360.

Really it's nothing but Windows Media Connect combined with WMP. Speaking of WMC, if you have this installed already, it uninstalls itself after installing this WMP Beta 2.

One extra thing, some of you may be VERY lucky to get Media Sharing in WMP working correctly. If not, you'll get an error about it not being started after you enabled it.

This was tested using my genuine Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition

Since I can't edit my post above....

Just wanted to add that WMP Beta 2 screwed up half of my songs (happened when I tried to import my collection into the library probably)! WMP 10 won't even play some of them meaning I have to go through my collection and reconvert the corrupt files! Winamp & Musicmatch will play them fine though but the starup times on those are way too slow.

I agree with Paperstack, it's bascially a bloated and slow version of Media Connect.

Once I'd installed WMP11, I added my Movies folder to the library (which took a long time). I then went back upstairs to see if they became available on my 360 in the Media Center Extender app. I could now see the new folders and the files in there, but all my Divx / Xvids wouldn't run cos of the "unsupported codec" issue that we've been having since day one.

It's really not worth the hassel.

Just install transcode 360 on your system with the latest Mencoder compile... and you can watch WHATEVER you want on your XBOX 360.

Granted, you'll still need to be running MCE '2005 but I assume most of you have that already.

But, IT DOES let you stream wmv videos and supported videos to your 360 on win xp Pro and Home which was not available before....its not Xvid and Divx, but either is MCE, so at least now you can stream some video to your 360 from your XP PC.

Xvid and Divx is usually only downloaded movies anyway....so i see why MS does not want to let people do it.

Where can i find the latest Menencoder and where do i put it?

Because i'm having serious dificulties tu play some x264 files with Transcode360

I installed it, but I still cannot connect from the xbox 360. Clicking on Media Center doesn't work , and there isn't anything listed un video like there is for music & pictures.

Thanks for the reply.
However, I read through the guide (which I had done), until I reached the following:

"It shares Pictures and Music and Videos with XBOX360. The Xbox360 can't see the Videos because the Dashboard Video Blade hasn't been changed to accept the content yet. I was told video blade will be updated in Fall dashboard update."

I can verify that Media Player does indeed stream video. I have a network IO-Data DVD player. I normally have to install some kind of server software like SwissCenter on my PC. However, I can now see the content by setting up sharing my DVD drives like the guide outlines in media player 11. However, IO-DATA already had the video sharing portion in their client.

PS
To make a long story short: There are two parts to stream video (server & client). MS addressed the non MediaCenter Edition server (XP Home & Pro), but hasn't updated the Xbox 360 client. So at present Media Center is still the only way you can stream video to the xbox 360.
