Help Me Boot From Slax Cd
« on: July 20, 2006, 01:54:00 AM »

I cannot get my pc to boot from the Slax Live CD.
I have a compatible VIA chipset, and have set 'boot from cd' in bios

Firstly i burned the contents of the Slax5.1.zip download, onto
and cd using Nero. but when i tried it, it just goes straight into windows.

So i tried burning again using the 'make bootable disc' feature in Nero.
Still the same.

Do i need to hit any keys to get it to boot from the cd? am i burning it right?

thanks.

yeah, i came close to making that mistake on a friends computer once when the iso was associated with winrar, and the windows flag for "hide extensions for known types" was set. i'd make sure that flags unset to avoid future mistakes, and if you still have trouble booting from the disc, just double check your boot order or there is probably a hotkey (f12 on most machines) that you can press while the system is booting to get a boot from menu. some bootable discs (bartPE specifically) have a "press any key to boot from cd" screen where if you miss that the system boots up normally instead of from the disc, so keep an eye open for something like that too.

---edit---

not necessessarily saying this applies to your slax cd, but general bootable disc advice.

yeah i've looked into both methods, but loading a cd seemed much easier than playing with wires (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
and its just a borrowed machine, i need to take the least risk possible. till i have bit more experience.

first drive i flashed with no experience was a hitachi.  Did 2 wire method and didnt brick.  Just hold wires together then power on, then let go right after you put the power on smile.gif  If you hold to long, then you are F-ed
Its amazing what reading and common sense can do  uhh.gif
