KeyDrive Patcher/Xtractor v0.5-- Posted by XanTium on April 24 14:03 EST
Scener released a tool that will allow you to easily extract and write the unique DVD key to/from an Hitachi-LG Xbox 360 firmware file (so no need to hex-edit it manually anymore). As you might know each DVD drive on the Xbox 360 has a unique key. That key is checked by your Xbox 360 console (so you normally can't switch drives, or use a DVD firmware with a diff key than yours). If the keys don't match the Xbox 360 will give an error while booting. This tool allows you to read/extract the key and write a key to a DVD firmware .bin file.
From http://www.foros360.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=572/readme:

Quote

FEATURES 0.5:
* Program can patch any keydrive into any Hitachi firmware file
* Program can check if a firmware file is encrypted or not
* Program show the keydrive of a Hitachi firmware file
* Program can extract the keydrive into a key.kdx file
* Program can show the key extracted to a key.kdx file
* Program can create custom key.kdx files

BUGS 0.5:
* When you create a custom key.kdx, if you enter a number higher than FF, the program crash

NEXT FEATURES:
* Compatibility with Samsung drives

Yes, it's real, u can test it if u want. In the rar there is a firmware called firm3D.bin. You can make a custom key.kdx and try to patch it.

Then, show the key of the firmware patched wink.gif

Looks like a nice tool.

If I had a DVD adaptor I'd test it out, but unfortunately I don't and it's a bit late to building one right now.

I think this tool would be nice to have for us early-adopting suckers who have the DVD drives that sound like a 747 taking off...

Yeah, true. I have a buddy who's drive is already giving him problems too. There are people (like me) who would rather buy a new drive and fix it ourselves than send it to MS$ to get f'd up, or lose our gamesaves, etc...  wink.gif

Good work with the program. I think the xbox360 and live are going to make mods much harder. I know these are totally different things to compare but when directv used to be hacked they would black list card numbers so that the system wouldn't let you view channels unless you had a valid "subbed" card number. Something more similar would be the xbox system and its hard drive, How live would record your hard drive number and ban you if you came online with a new hard drive. This time around it seems that there are multiple hardware "keys" that might have to be changed if you get banned. M$ really thought up some new things this time around.

We'll have to wait and see.  If the DVD drive can be hacked to "advertise" that it has a legitimate firmware but in all reality USE a hacked one, then it can't be detected.  This is the path that should be focused on at this point.

yes but since the dvd drive has its on key it means that even if you switch dvd drives you still have to use the same key. That also means that if M$ bans you for any reason they might log in multiple keys (like hard drive serial, dvd key, and anything else) and block all of them. That means in order to get back on live you would have to somehow replace every key. Ofcourse there might be a program that can change the required key to something else, It still wont stop the fact that you will need a new hard drive unless you would want to get your new key banned. No different than when you replaced your hard drive you had to flash a new bios unless you wanted your new hard drive to be banned as well.

i don't think they will check the hdd serial. But first of i don't own a xbox360 but you can buy a core system and
a pro system, or wath's it called but its a fact you can buy a hdd for the core system. so there is no hdd key stored it the xbox at this point.  so you can upgrade and maybe later on to a bigger drive.
But then the Hdd serial will change.
Okay ms can have a list of every hdd that gets in a xbox. i am pretty sure about that.
But then again this would be a perfect tool for getting the job done.
nice to se some progress in the xbox360 scene i just wait for the dev and homebrew scene to kick of.
it stared nice with the flash player etc. thx to the ksoik <- demo but news is slow.
yet again props to you all in the scene.
i luve it.

Good job on the program. I like seeing helpful/useful programs coming out for the xbox360. A utility that can allow you to change your DVD drive on your own is great for a person like me that likes to fix his own things. Thanks.

Keep this discussion ON TOPIC, this tool allows you to change out the serial number of the DVD drive with another DVD drive, while it IS a firmware hack it has nothing to do with hacking the firmware to play backups. Any more posts made to this thread about backups, firmware hacking for backups, or anything else piracy releated will be deleted and you will earn a strike on your account.
...you have been warned

If you think this article is about firmware hacking for backups, READ THE ARTICLE AGAIN, because that's not what it's about.

What is the purpose of the file firm3D.bin? I'm not really understanding this, is this a legal firmware update for the Hitachi drive?

Thanks, DeaL
