Confused About Media Center
« on: March 28, 2006, 09:52:00 PM »

I'm very very confused here. I definitely installed Media Center today on my pc. I know almost nothing about Media Center but I have the installation CDs. When I check my system info it just says Windows XP Pro SP2 (doesn't mention Media Center...)

I got the software from xbox.com/pcsetup (and chose that I had Media Center 2005 as an OS)
Ran the software, shared a couple folders, and they work fine in the media (music/pics) sections.

however.... To get the ability to use the 360 with Media Center features just won't work. It never asks me for the number - i tried re-running the installation too.

Is it possible that I just don't have Media Center XP, even though for at least an hour today my pc was installing the operating system?

If anyone can help me out, i'll appreciate it.

Sounds like you just installed the software (xbox.com) for Media Center. Not the Media Center OS.

Are you sure you installed the REAL media center OS?

Im having a very similar if not identical problem, I installed Media Center on my PC, then i download Windows Media Connect, installed it, but during installation, it does not ask me for the security code. The code is in the format xxxx-xxxx. During the install it says it is authorising my xbox 360, and the end it says it has been authorised.

I have been in the newbie forum discussing this, and someone posted screenshots of what is supposed to happen during Windows Media connect install, and it very clearly asks for the code.

The only difference between XP and Media Center as far as i can tell is that installation options are limited and in Accessories from the start menu, there is media center functionality.

How would we tell if we had a * ahem * dodgy version of Media Center?

Should we try one of the other versions of windows media connect that are available from the Xbox website?

and what is update rollup 2, and how do i determine if it is installed?

Ok guys, first off you have to have Win XP Media Center edition on your computer.  As for penix, did you do a new install or upgrade over the other.  you have to do a complete new install with the media center disks or it will not install the media center software.  There is a hack made to run media center inside win xp pro but it doesnt work for me or others as it crashes.  Im going to see if i can make a work around that but wont know till i can get a look at the real media center install.

Thanks for sharing the link, it looks helpful but i'm kinda in a rush so i'll have to read it a little better.

Blagwedge looks like you have the exact same problem as me. I notice almost nothing different, and with media connect it does say my xbox is authorized yet the Media Center XP feature doesn't work, it just tells me to leave it on that screen while installing ect.

I guess i'll check out that link a bit later, but for now i think it probably wasn't a good idea to install Media Center XP because my Windows Media Player won't work and my dad has like 400 playlists on it (which are HOPEFULLY not dead... because if they are, so am i).

I think people may be confusing Windows Media Connect (WMC) and Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE).  One (Windows Media Connect) is a program for Windows XP that lets you connect to the XBox with very limited capabilities - mainly just streaming music, and the other (Windows XP Media Center Edition) is a whole operating system (OS) that replaces other versions of Windows XP (such as Home or Pro) and has many more media capabilities.

Most of the programs discussed here require Windows XP Media Center Edition.

I believe installing Windows XP Media Center Edition requires formatting your hard drive and doing a whole OS install just like you would do if you were installing Windows XP Home or Pro.  I'm not sure if you can upgrade XP Home or Pro to MCE.

I hope that clears things up.

....right, i dont know if you read the other thread, but if you go to www.xbox.com/pcsetup (like it tells you on screen on the xbox 360) it will ask you to download an 81 MB file to install the Windows Media Center EXTENDER. Theres the important bit. Windows Media Connect is necessary, but its not what talks to your xbox and moves it off the installation screen. The installation screens for both packages look almost exactly the same, except when your installing the extender it DOES ask for the security code.

Hehe, i almost wept with joy when it asked me for the security code last night....once you put it in, the xbox and pc start talking to each other.

I have a different problem now, when i try to launch media center on the 360, i get a message saying that my session was terminated by another user or application. Puzzling. Oh well, i suppose i should get back to work

My install of Media Center XP was probably not successful, that's my guess, because i don't have the Media Center application on my desktop. However, it does say XP Pro 2002 Edition which is what it's supposed to say when you have Media Center.... I did get the 81 mb file, it still doesn't ask for authorization though. Today i am going to try to install Media Center to a new hard drive.

I had this problem but it turned out  the first CD is just windows xp, the second cd contains SP2 and all the stuff for Media center.  Being as i wasnt paying attention i just installed the first CD and rebooted and it came up with just plain jane windows xp stuff and confused the hell out of me for awhile till i reinstalled and noticed it ask for 2nd CD which i managed to miss before and then the world was allright again safe from my braindeadness.

Im having another problem now, i cant wait to turn my network into a wireless one and see all the problems that will cause....(IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) (lil bit of sarcasm there)

My new problem is that i have installed the extender software on both the PC and my 360, they both talked to each other (had a couple of glasses of wine, booked a motel room) so now my xbox 360 and my PC appear to be in bed with each other. But whenever i try to connect to the PC from the 360, it brings up something very similar to the XP loading screen, tries to connect, then after a while, gives up and says that my session was terminated by another user or application on the PC.

EH?!?!?!

WHAT!?!?!?!?!?

I just want to watch cartoons on my xbox!!!!! Waaaaah!

why is it doing this? Did i do something bad in a past life? Im starting to suspect i may well be the re-incarnation of Hitler, the way this is all going....

If anyone has ANY help they can provide, or just wants to give a bit of gentle ribbing, then please, feel free....

I'm having the exact same problem and I DO have media center, albeit a 'gateway' bundled version.  See my thread at
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=502856

I'll let you know if I manage to find any workarounds.  It seems the software that enables the media center extention to the 360 is very picky on what version of media center you have
