Media Center Install Over Xp Home
« on: February 27, 2006, 05:56:00 PM »

I hope this is not off topic, but can I install Media Center (assuming I buy a copy on ebay or whatever) and install it on my Compaq laptop?  The laptop is fairly new, AMD 3700+, 1 GB Ram, GeForce 64MB  pre-loaded with XP Home.  I would set up a 2nd partition pretty much only to stream stuff to my 360, I'm not concerned with any other features at this point.  Has anyone had any luck doing this?  I'd hate to spend the $100+ and figure out it wont work.

Have there been a lot of people who have done this successfully?  What is involved?  Do you just pop in the disc and let it install?  OR do you have screw around with it to get it to work?  I have a high end computer and don't want to screw it up by installing one operating system over another.  I also don't want to have to reformat and lose all the data that I have accumulated(I know I can back it up, but that will take quite some time).

Yeah just pop it in and basically what you are doing is upgrading windows XP. You do not want to do a fresh install but rater upgrade. Hope this helps.

A fresh install usually works better but you should be fine especially if you use an oem edtition like what's on ebay

Ya, I have Windows XP Media Center Edition running on an old P2-400mhz and I can connect and stream audio and pictures no problem but I cannot run Transcode 360 to play divx/xvid.  Now that I think of it I haven't tride running any wmv files, but I do not that transcode requires a decent amount of CPU power.  My divx/xvid play choppy with this setup and when I check my processes while playing these movies the CPU is pinned at 100%

Oh and I very much agree, fresh install is ALWAYS better.  I never upgrade an OS, just asking for problems.
