Media Connect Memory Usage Beyond A Joke
« on: February 24, 2006, 10:25:00 AM »

what a bunch of (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jester.gif)'s  MS are...

I have been stopping my media connect service and not bothering using my 360 recently because media connect 2 seems to use far too much in the way of system resources normally reaching 145mb. I have just started it running again today after a re-install to check if it is any better and now it has reached the dizzying heights of 300+mb  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleeping.gif)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleeping.gif)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleeping.gif)

Personally I cant wait to get an alternative that works, this is shit quite frankly! Fair enough I have enough memory to spare (2Gb) but it is not the point, media connect should NO-WAY take up as much memory as the full operating system plus all my apps running - NO-WAY-AT-ALL!!!

So at present with all my desktop custyomisations running, skype, graphics tablet etc etc and media connect my PC is guzzling 736Mb of my ram. I have asked this question before a while back and just got bitty responses with no real proof of an alternative - but...

Are there ANY UPNP appz that can connect to the 360 fully, that actually work and are a decent alternative to microshit's crappy media connect? Preferably free too although as long as there are trial versions for me to make sure they are working I dont mind paying.

Any help here is appreciated, I need to get this system hog dealt with so I dont have to mess about with ending processes while im gaming or using my music production stuff.

cheers

Yeah, WMC is a bit of a ram hog. I have two gigs as well, and while I agree it is ridiculous that it uses that much memory, I just accept it and don't worry about it. I know what you mean though, when I first was looking in task manager after I installed it, I was extremely surprised that something that simple could use up so much ram. Even when not in use it idles at about 58mb.

I don't know of any alternative except for Twonky if I recall correctly and it costs like 25 bucks but they let you try it for 30 minutes(I think, don't quote me though) for free.

If only I could get it to use 58Mb that would be a start...

Does Twonky actually work? I may give it a whirl, as long as its better than this MS rubbish I dont mind paying. I personally cannot wait until someone cracks this mother. I want rid of the crappy Ms media centre bollox and the freedom to use whatever UPnP software I choose.

cheers

I've written a free (GPL) Mediaserver using Java which you can download from http://sourceforge.net/projects/x360mediaserve/

Its mainly designed for being used to play music formats that need transcoding but it works with MP3 and WMA (except lossless).

Its currently at a testing stage so it needs a bit of work to set up but a number of people have got it working.

Not really. Make sure your firewall allows java to act as a server on the local network.  Your computer has more than one interface (such as running a USB modem) you may need to specify the IP by running start.bat from the command line followed by the ip address you want to serve on. Also its probably a good idea to disable Media Connect as I've not done much testing of running both together.

I'm not sure if its mentioned anywhere but the internet radio support currently only works with MP3 streams.

Ill be honest here, the only thing I need it for at present it serving music from my office PC to my 360 which is why media connect is so ridiculous. I just cant justify 200-300Mb RAM used just for this.

I will be trialling this today.

Tawsi, you may be on to something good here...

I have it running, the 360 picks it up really easily and there is no messing about there. The only problem I seem to be having with it is it is not finding my mp3 files??? Quite a big problem but no doubt only a small solution with it.

Apart from this it is using less than 12mb which is superb!!!

nice one! - now any tips on getting it to find my files?

cheers

When you add the directory containing the mp3s via the web interface does the console say anything? It should print things like "Adding Artist:" and "New Album:".

Also does a streams playlist appear in the playlists menu?

It did pop up with adding artist: but that was all, then adding playlist: streams which had a load of stuff like mortbay.jetty.servlet etc...

From the sounds of it it isn't seeing any of the mp3 files in the directory you fed into http://127.0.0.1:7000/conf.html . I think thats the URL I assigned it to (the version I'm working on has been changed quite a bit so I'm not certain but if you go to http://127.0.0.1:7000 you should see the listing). Have you tried setting the music dir to a path containing just a few mp3s to see what happens? If possible could you post the terminal output here.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Tawsi

 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jester.gif)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

I have had it working, it now sees the files so thanks for that!!! It is still only using 25Mb so brilliant!

Now just a couple of Q's..

I have the batch file in my auto start folder but when it starts it does not pick up the config, is there a way to get it to save the details so I dont input it every day?

Another one is trivial really, so it can wait...

I have passed the app onto a friend of mine who like me was sick of media connect.

thanks again

I uninstalled WMC yesterday as it was using shitloads of RAM

and the fact that I can't get my 360 to connect to my PC anymore

PC software setup says "360 not found"

Will try Tawsi's App next.
