Samba Shares ---please Help...almost Out Of Hair..
« on: February 04, 2005, 06:12:00 PM »

I have been using Samba Shares and XBMC for a long time now.............. until 3 days ago :(

I was idling on efnet on IRC, and I got hacked, or whatever :P but they disabled my entire home network, and my inet connection thru an IRC backdoor........anyways..... I got that all taken care of, and installed norton, and then firewall Sygate personal blah blah...

Once I realized that the Shares were no longer working, I uninstalled the firewall, but it still gives me "access denied" with XBMC........

I can ftp just fine... My xboxes see my network fine, but always access denied.

I unshared, and then reshared all the drives I wanted to share, and rechecked the names and paths, but still "access denied"

I deleted the gamesave for XBMC, just to test, and still access denied.....

really very frustrating, I have never had any problems like this before, hopefully someone with more network knowledge than I have, can help.

WinXP SP1 btw

thanks for any help :D

Make sure the Server service is running on your computer (Start>Run "services.msc")

check the simple things, sometimes they are the answer -

- has your ip changed?
- did you accidently enable the built in XP firewall?
- can you see your network shares from another computer on your local network (i.e. is this an xbox problem)?
- did you change your password?

No, as I said, I can ftp to and from the XboXes just fine, and I also noticed that I have inet access on the Xboxes as well. Both Ava , and XBMC. But cannot access shared folders.

Firewall... when my problem first occured from IRC, I tried to enable XPs Firewall, but an error occurred, and it did not take. The option is still available to turn it on, so I believe it is off. Any other way to check this?

No, my PC also lost connection with my other network PC

I use both passworded smb shares, and non passworded shares. Neither works.

Thanks for trying to help.

Did you disable Simple File Sharing? Open an explorer window and go to Tools>Folder Options. Go to the "View" tab and look under Advanced Settings. The last one should be "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)." Uncheck it.

Unchecked it, and then rechecked it, Access denied either way :(

Which way is best for future use?

Disabled is usually the best.

Have you tried running the Network Setup Wizard since your network got rebuilt? It may help with sharing issues like this.

Can another PC see your computer and just not connect to it, or can other PCs not even see your computer?

My other PC cannot even see this PC, and yes, I have tried the network wizard several  times :/

The XboX however, can see it fine, just get access denied

In the control panel, Network Connections, do you have any bridges listed?

No, I did not bridge my connections, and none are listed as bridged.

I have Cable Inet, and then a second NIC for LAN (Xboxes) and I share the first NIC (Inet), so ICS is open, but not ICF

Right-click your connection in the Network Connections window and go to Properties. Do you have TCP/IP and File and Printer Sharing turned on?
