360 Don't See Pc With Wmc
« on: November 24, 2005, 11:43:00 AM »

PC is running Windows XP Pro SP2.

I installed and configure windows media connect 2.0 on it.
I configured music, pictures and video shares.
I even add my xbox 360 to the list of allowed devices.

But on xbox 360, it says it can't detect a pc running WMC.

There is no firewall on the pc, windows xp firewall is turned off.

only difference is the pc is set to a static ip : 192.168.11.111

and the xbox 360 is set dhcp and get it from my wrt54gs linksys router.
the xbox 360 ip is 192.168.11.200

may it be the ip problem ?
what is the tcp port for WMC so i can telnet to it to see if WMC is really sharing something ?

help needed.
Thanks in advance.

Ya...im having the same problem. I have Win XP Home. WMC 2.0 (and the WinXP  sp2 patch for the 360) I have wrt54gs as well. My computer can see my 360 (and ive allowed everything) but my 360 cant see my pc. Now my 360 gave me this 6 digit code it said  i would need to install the software on my pc; but it never asked me for anything. Im using a wireless bridge on my 360 as well. Ive made sure UPnP is enabled on my router; as well as disabling all of my firewalls (Router,XP, and software) i have NOOO idea what the hell is wrong; anyone have any ideas?

problem solved !

it was what i tought...ip config.

1. i installed WMC to my laptop and xbox 360 was able to see it, even with the laptop connected via wifi.
so i discovered problem was related to PC config.

for your Xbox 360 to see your PC with WMC, your pc must be configured like this;

a) dhcp

b) static ip, BUT ONLY ONE CONFIGURED

(i usually use 192.168.11.111, .0.111 and .1.111 cause sometimes i need to access static devices who are set in these subnets)

so if you use more than one, your xbox360 will failed to find your PC.
so come back to just one static ip, it will solve all this.

in my case, it worked.

If none of that works for you, try this.  Go to media/music/computers.  Then it should say something like "I can't find a computer.  Would you like to connect to one now?"  Say yes and it should find your computer and connect.  This should work if you can't connect through the setup under the system settings.

I have firewall disabled, my wmc computer uses dhcp to get an IP address. The router is set to assign the wmc computer the same address every time 192.168.0.100. The ip never changes.

The xbox still does not see my computer

There are a few services that need to be running to make this work. I had previously disabled 'Universal Plug and Play Device Host' and 'SSDP Discovery Service' because I never had a use for them. After setting these services to "automatic" my PC was able to see my Xbox. Also make sure you have downloaded the Windows.NET Framework. I also had to add the IP 192.168.2.52 to the Trusted Zones in Zonealarm.

I could get WMC to setup fine, but not connect to my PC. I could connect to Xbox Live just fine, but it could not find my Stupid Windows machine sitting right next to it.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)
Here's what I did to get it to work (AT LAST!!!)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)  (Including trying EVERYTHING so far in this thread, this worked the trick for me)
NOTE: I had to do BOTH of these steps. It appears both of these conditions must be met. I could not get it to work by doing just one or the other. Your mileage may vary.
1)-->TURN OFF INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING (If you had your PC set up to use XBMC with your Xbox, you may have had this option turned on. I had to turn this off to get WMC to connect. Not 100% clear as to why, but it worked for me.
2)-->Enter the MAC address of the Xbox360 itself into the Alternate MAC Address setting under Additional Settings/Advanced Settings on your Xbox360. I used the Wired MAC Address of the Xbox360. (What it says on the lower left of the advanced settings page) Also check to be sure this MAC address matches the one under the properties for your Allowed Xbox360 in WMC.

Think of it like this- WMC is like one of those drivers at the airport holding up a sign with their client's name on it. XBox360 arrives at the airport with her assistant. The assistant spots the driver. "OK, we're here. Let's go." she says to him. The driver says, "Wait, who are you?" The assistant takes him literally and shows him her passport, with HER name on it, not XBox360's. "Sorry," says the driver, "you're not my customer".
Now, the assistant is flustered until suddenly she gets a call from The Office who tells her to use Xbox360's passport, not her own. The driver needs to see Xbox360's credentials. The assistant takes XBox360's passport and shows it to the driver, and off they go.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

(BTW, I'm using my original Xbox wireless adapter (model MN-740) with the cable that came with my Xbox360. If you can get to Live, your cable's fine. Are you using the new Xbox360 USB wireless adapter or their old one, like me?

Also- my whole network is setup for DHCP addressing- no static addresses at all. That's one way to be sure everything in your house is on the same network (if that's what you want).
My Windows firewall is enabled. I've never used it before but it seems to be letting the right things go where they need to. WMC (freaking) works for me now, and thank God that's over with!

Just curious for you guys... I'm guessing you tried turning off your XP firewall.. and that still didn't help... have you went in and turned the services back on or added the exception for the Media connect to the firewall settings??? my XP pro is in dire need of a reload ... can't even install the SP2 to it... so I can't confirm this as of yet to be a place to look...

Although I do know that XP is funny after the firewall has been turned on it's not a unchecking the box to totally turn it off... heck you have to allow incoming echo request just to ping the thing  blink.gif
