Replacing Dash.xex
« on: February 13, 2010, 11:05:00 AM »

As we now have relatively easy write access to the NAND, is it possible to replace Dash.xex (or another startup xex) with another dashboard/application?

I did not dare replace the file myself, as I do not have the ability to reflash my dump at the moment if something goes wrong.  Has anyone else attempted/succeeded in this? smile.gif

would be awesome to replace the whole dash with e.g. freestyle dash but still have the ability to boot the original dash from the custom dash

you could flash xellous just in case something goes wrong and ive tried and failed. I replace the dash.xex with my shortcut.xex which runs xexmenu on the hdd and the console boots, shows the 360 animation, but sudenly runs into E71 error. Im sure for me i needed the dash.xex encrypted with my CPU key but i dont know how to do that, or any key that XBReboot uses.

I've just installed XeLLous and completed a full backup.  Changes to dashboard files resulting in error messages will not affect XeLLous, correct?

Regarding the necessary encryption of Dash.xex; this can be done using XexTool, as far as I know.

"xextool -e e dash.xex"

What ever errors in xbox 360 dash wont effect xell, the xex's inside the nand is encrypted with the CPU key and the shortcut.xex must be encrypted with the key as well, but i dont know how zero paired images are encrypted.

I've been poking through a 1888 version (blade dashboard) NAND dump which I made a few years ago.  It should be pretty easy to get the original dashboard running after I patch the xex.

Just a random experiment.  I'll post back when it works/does not work. biggrin.gif
