If your brothers friend has the update on HDD/MU try pluging that in.
And boot the xbox while holding the sync button.

Failing that you will have to wait to the 11th when the new update comes out. Then load that on a disk.
Iv had a xbox do what youv said recently and it wouldnt get the update off the usb it had to be on a disk.

yea did u google this? theres some uber easy procedure to clear off a failed update. I think its holding down the sync button before and while the system is booting up. something like that

Yes, I did google it extensively and all of the "uber easy" procedures were ineffective for partially failed updates. However I did figure out how to fix it. I had to get an xbox hdd that had the full update installed on it, then boot from that hdd and into the dashboard. Once I got to the dashboard, I left the xbox on, and swapped in the corrupted hard drive. The new update then over-wrote the partial one, and after a reboot we were back in business! Hope it helps out other people with similar problems.
