Hdd Required To Use Update Disc?
« on: March 24, 2008, 08:30:00 PM »

yeah you do need an HDD for the update.  you need it basically for any update you decide to use.  it's probably the reason why your system hangs when you try to update it without the HDD.

as for going and blowing a hundred bucks.....you can get a used and refurbished 20GB HDD for $60 at EB/GS.  that or you can go to the BST forum and possibly get a 20GB or higher HDD for less than retail.  condition however would be questionable.  there's also ebay as an alternative.

You DO NOT need a harddrive to run the update.  What use would a core system be if it could not be updated?

A failed system update should be able to be cleared by holding in the sync button while powering the console up.  Continue holding the sync button until you see the dash come up.

modding it will not fix it, it has nothing to do with the DVD drive.

are you sure you used the update properly? did you extract it from the .zip? have you tried it on a thumb drive?

Absolutely sure.  Look at all the different ways I tried it.  I did try it with a thumb drive as well, still no luck.  It's almost like it's not even taking the time to look for anything, just throwing up the error msg as soon as the splash screen is done.  I'm not even sure why it's asking for an update.  The guy who burnt it out in the first place was watching a movie.  Since it was asking I thought I'd try giving it something to look for.

My best educated guess is that something got corrupted in the internal memory when it went rrod, since it was a core system and has never seen xbox live, or any updates before.  I'm just hoping there's some kind of workaround.

Any other suggestions?
