Is 360 Media Player Kooky Or What?
« on: March 28, 2006, 09:42:00 AM »

Just got my 360 today after four months of waiting (then ordering elsewhere and getting it two weeks later...)

Anyway, installed OK.  Set up Windows Media Connect on PC.  Connected through 360 OK.

What is going on with the media library?!  Am I missing something or what?  No search.  All the artists have been sorted by individual tracks, media player 10 doesnt do this, for example when you have a CD of various artists in MP10 it will show as 'various artists' in the 360 it has added another 12 artists.  This also works correctly in XBMC....so what it going on with the 360?

I thought that it might be a function of the windows media connect, but after installing Twonky it is the same, so it is the way that the 360 handles it.

Also I shared my images, but when looking from the 360 I have an additional load of crap from the folder images sucked in from the mp3 files.

What is going on here?  Has the world gone mad?  I feel like I am using a $50 MP3 player not a $500 super console.

......havent got a game yet!  And all my original titles are not compatible.

At the moment I am not impressed, anybody offer any info!

Thanks,

Mark

Well, if you makes you feel any better, I don't think MS did such a great job with the development of the media player aspects of the 360 and I'm also a little miffed that there are so many good original XBox games that still not compatible (emulated).  They haven't even updated the compatible games list since... ... well I'll be... they retroactively updated the list.  I could have sworn it wasn't updated a week or two ago when I checked.  Now it say February. dry.gif

Anyway, my point was... now what was my point?  Ah, yes...  My point was that I preferred good ol' XBMC to what we have on the XBox 360 any day.  I wish MS would get in gear and develop something that has many more features and is more customizable by the end user.  They just need to look at some of the apps people made for the original XBox for inspiration.  A lot of very talented people made some great apps and those kind of apps are what the 360 could benefit greatly from.

Sorry to rant in your thread.

Yes, the 360 Media Player is a bit kooky.  jester.gif

And if you're on a budget and would like to try some 360 games try this link.  And on the left hand side check the "Buy It Now items" box and click the [Show Items] button below and then at the top sort by "Price:lowest first".  You'd be surprised at how low some people sell their used games for.  Just be sure to read the descriptions carefully and take shipping into account.  But you can save a good 25 bucks or more this way.

(couldn't get the direct link to that search to work properly)

I don't know much about Windows Media Connect because I'm using Windows XP Media Center Edition to stream media, but if it's the same at all, you might want to just specifially share the folder that has all of your pictures in it and pick that folder rather than sharing and picking the whole drive.  Otherwise it will find any pictures scattered anywhere on the drive.

Now, I'm just hypothesizing so I could be way off base.  Plus I don't know exactly how the interface of WMC works.

I'm actually sourcing a copy of MCE edition just to see if it is any better.  Are you saying that using MCE the interface in the 360 is just the same.....that just sucks.  I though the whole selling point of the 360 was its other enhancements like media streaming.....

In media connect I have shared two folders, one 'my music' and one 'my images'.  even though they are different shares the 360 picks up the images from the mp3 folders and displayed them in 'my images'.......ggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Also I just bought PGR3 (i dont actually like it but as there are no rally games at release...)

Now when this is in the drive it spins up permenently and howls like a banchee.  It is twice as loud as the old xbox.  I played a DVD and this was OK.  So playing games is it really supposed to be this loud?

Well I installed MCE and connected up.  Unfortunately the xbox kept barfing, I assume this might be as I was running MCE inside a VM Virtual PC...

Anyway, looking at MCE itself it again sorts artists by the main tag of 'artists' instead of the 'band' tag like MP10 does.....so when you have two artists on one track (a contributing artist) you end up with two artists being shown in the menu.....

Ultimately it is unusable as I have thousands of artists to scroll through, when there should only be a couple of hundred.

Is there any way around this?  This is just terrible.....

OK, I formatted and reinstalled on my PC and I have the same, the interface is painfully slow, and I have noticed that underlying the extender using WMC for the share anyway!  What I have found really annoying is that I believe that when you set up the xbox/pcsetup program it takes the paths for your music by searching not by accessing the WMP10/MCE database and you cannot ammend them later, even when I added the extra share in WMC....

Ok, here are some pics of what I am seeing, as you can see from these MCE is ordering artists using the WMP10 field of 'contributing artists'....how do I change this to 'Album Artists'???

Yeah, but thats not going to work with a CD with Various Artists is it?  If I put both the Album artist and Artist as 'Various Artists', I wont be able to see the artists if I wanted to?  I thought this was the whole idea.  Set the 'Album Artist' as Various Artists, then the 'Artist' as the actual artists.  But I dont want it to search by the artist, I want it to search by the 'Album Artist'...

Well, this response is a few months late, but that sound isn't actually the DVD drive spinning.  That sound is the fans that keep the XBox main processor and video processor cool.  They only spin up to full speed when playing games because that's the only time the main processor and video processor start really working hard and generating heat.
