Linksys Wireless Gameadapter And Xbmc
« on: January 26, 2005, 03:06:00 PM »

Hi,

My Xbox has XMBC as default dashboard. I have Linksys wireless accesspoint (router+ switch, b-type) for my laptop and used to connect my Xbox with an ethernetcable. No problem.

But now I bought a Linksys Gameadapter (b-type) to make my Xbox wireless and cannot get it to work!   :( Can anyone who has this working, or another ethernet bridge, please let me know the settings on the adapter and in xbmc? Please?

Here's what I thought was good, but does not work:

Access point: DCHP starting with IP 192.168.1.100, no WEP, IP=192.168.1.1
Adapter/ethernet bridge: obtain an IP from DCHP (it now has 192.168.1.101)
ssid on acces point and adapter are the same and both are on channel 6
XBMC: Static IP: 192.168.1.105, subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway: 192.168.1.1

Is this right or wrong? I tried the weather-option in xbmc to check and got no data. I tried to FTP with Flash FXP, but no reply.

The setup-utility that comes with the game-adapter can find the ethernet-bridge when it is connected to the Xbox and I can change it's options. So it looks like that is working somehow.

I tried things for hours now and am really stuck, so any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Aaah!lex

Ok try this. Get everything hooked up and boot XBMC. Now go to a PC and open up a command prompt (Start>Run type cmd). Then type ping <ip>, filling in the Xbox IP address. If all goes well you should be able to ping it. If you can then it's a DNS issue on your Xbox. Play around with the DNS settings on your Xbox.

If you do not a get a ping back then check the wireless connection. Open up your router config page and see if it's detecting the Xbox connected to it. If not play around with the wireless settings.

Good luck.

First make sure that wireless is enabled on your access point.  Then make sure the SSID from your access point and your game adapter match exactly.
If you're not using a WEP key, set your game adapter to "In" for Infrastructure.
Your adapter has a couple settings. P1 and P2 are used for WEP encrypting.
The channels (1-9?) are for a wireless system link setup (I think).
And "In" will just access the network if no WEP is enabled.

There are three network settings in XBMC; Static, DHCP, and Dashboard.
Since your access point is set to DHCP, set XBMC the same.  Mine has always been set to "dashboard" so you may want to try that too.

I have the same setup and it seems to work unreliably at best.

I use the P1 setting because my apartment complex has about 20 SSID's flying around and the xbox just grabs its favorite in infrastructure ("In") mode.  Make sure you configure the adapter using the cd and a hardline between it and your pc.

I use dhcp and no http proxy from the xbox.  On the router I have the MAC filter enabled to allow both the xbox's MAC and the adapter's MAC.  I've never gotten WEP to work for anything, but I hear it's possible, even for the xbox.

So far I'm pretty disappointed with the adapter.  Samba music shares take a long time to buffer.  Sometimes it can find the internet, sometimes it can find the kai client, usually not both.

Maybe I'm just a n00b, maybe I need to stop being cheap and get wireless G.

I have the official xbox wireless adapter and a 802.11b network, and the same unreliability is present. Long connect times, dropped signal mid game, sometimes the internet doesnt exist, etc.

I would like to know if a G network would fair any better.

It may not necessarily be your wireless network.  First of all, wireless b can send data at up to 11Mbps, but your live connection will only ever be as fast as your internet connection.  I don't know anyone who has a 11Mbps downstream.  Long connect times may be a poor signal or interference.  Go into the advance connection settings in your dash.  Select wireless.  That will show you how strong your connection is and if it's operating at full speed.

Wireless b and g both run at 2.4ghz.  So do microwaves and most cordless phones, so if you live in an apartment building you could get a lot of interference.  Also, those dropped games may not be you.  I could be other users or the server itself.  You never really know.  Check your signal.

My buddy's xbox is run throughport on his network with a 3Mbps downstream/500Kbps upstream and we still get lag and dropped games.  Mine is on wireless g with 128bit encryption and I don't notice anymore lag than at his house.  Wireless g isn't anymore reliable than wireless b, just faster transfer rates between your pc/router and your xbox.

Hi everybody,

Thanks for the replies :)
I am still having troubles getting this working. I gave the gameadapter a static IP above the DHCP-range and gave XBMC a static IP within the DCP-range of my acces-point. The game-adapter is set to 'In'. Now, I have the XBMC Rss-feeds and the weather-info! So that half of it.

But the other half is still not working. When I ping the IP of the XBox from my PC, I get no reply. FTP also does not work. So it looks like my Xbox has a wireless connection to the accesspoint and to internet, but my PC can't see it! Weird!  :o Anybody have any idea what still is wrong? :uhh:

I will post all my settings later today. If I get this working, I promise I will make a FAQ for this and post it at xbox-scene. Because this is much harder then to be expected and the answers I got on this topic are helpfull but not complete. It would also be helpfull if any of you that have the same hardware (xbox with xbmc, router/switch with wireless, linksys gameadapter) could post all your networksettings.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi everybody,

Still not have everything working, so I hope for some more usefull replies. :) Here is where I stand so far. With the settings below I have the weather and RSS-feeds working on the Xbox, but no way to reach it from my PC (no FTP and not even a PING-reply).  :grr: Also, the python-scripts are not working (and I am sure I have all the files in place), but I am not sure if that has something to do with this.

I read in some replies that some of you have the same setup and have this working. So please, please, can you tell me where I am going wrong?:uhh:

Thanks,
Alex

On the accesspoint:
Linksys BEFW11S4
wireless b is working (I also have a wireless laptop without problems)
set to DCHP, range: 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.50, no WEP, no SSID (so unsafe, but I don't care)
IP of the accesspoint: 192.168.1.1

On the Linksys Wireless gameadapter:
Set to In (infrastructure mode)
Switch set to X, not too II (If I set it to II than weather and RSS on Xbox don't work anymore)
Static IP set to 192.168.1.160 (deliberately set outside the DCHP-range of the accesspoint)
SSID set to 'Any' (default setting)

On the Xbox:
Static IP 192.168.1.106 (If I try dynamic, than the xbox does not get an IP)
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1 (this is the IP of the accesspoint! Is that ok?)
DNS: 192.168.1.1 (is that ok?)
HTTP proxy: no
internet info: yes (don't know what this is for!)
FTP-server: yes
Time synchro: yes
webserver: yes
webserver port: 80
webserver password: none

On my PC:
wired connection to the accesspoint
Dynamic IP, given by the accesspoint. Internet working without problems
Flash FXP
When I connect the Xbox with a cable to my PC, then FTP works! When I try it with the wireless gameadapter, then is doesn't. There is not even a PING-reply from the Xbox.

Hrmm not sure what Linksys game adapter you have, but I have the 802.11g one, and it doesnt grab an address of its own, it just sorta acts as a bridge. I did have to plug it into a computer and use a windows setup utility, but that was just to set the SSID.

No problems here...wish I had a fix for you, perhaps a new firmware for the thing?

Hi Alex,

I've grabbed one of these recently and my experiences match yours (though it was the ISA server I'm connecting to that is at fault - not the Wireless Bridge!)

I'll try to point you in the right directions here (what worked for me!)

This is the root - no real probs here; though you could try setting a SSID here to identify your network... you'll see why in a sec...

Setting to In is the best way to get this to work - setting to X means you've used a straight cable (non crossover - why it's this way I've got no idea!!) and setting outside the DHCP scope is essential, though truth be told, the advertised IP will be the XBOX's. You'll also need to set the SSID to match the accesspoint via the CD that came with the adaptor.

Okay, here's where you may be hitting some strife. The IP Address is not good. Set it outside of the DHCP Scope (192.168.1.99 will work); Your gateway setting is spot on - needs to be set to the accesspoint's IP Address (as all IP Traffic will route through it) Set the DNS to the same as what your PC is set to - if it's a dynamic one from a CMD prompt, run IPCONFIG /ALL to show it; think the router will act as one but it may be inheriting your ISP's (in either case, set the XBOX's DNS to match the PC)

If all of this works you should be able to reboot the XBOX and see the RSS News ticker and the weather. Even better, you should be able to PING the XBOX on the IP of the XBOX (forget the Wireless adaptor's IP Address - think it's only used to web configure it) But you will also need to add a SSID to your computer so that it's all on the same loop - I'm running an AD HOC at home and it's working a treat this way. Good luck!

Hi Adam,

Thank you very much for your reply. I did everything as you described, but sadly, no improvement.  :(. Wheater and rss work, no ping or ftp from my pc. And also, no working pythonscripts.

My pc is attached wired to the acccespoint (not wireless). Today I put the Xbox also on a networkcable and attached it to the accesspoint. Then ping and ftp was possible without troubles. I also tried the wireless gameadapter on my pc as a wireless adapter and could go on the internet without any problems. So the bridge seems ok too.

My conclusion is that the problem is the communication between the pc and the xbox through the accesspoint. Or, my 'homenetwork'. Internetaccess is not the problem. But I don't know what to do about it.

So, I hope so more people read this topic and have some suggestions for me.  :luv:

Hey aaahlex,

Hope this helps you. I have pretty much the exact same setup you have.  Only difference is my wireless router is a DLink.
OK on with the setup.

On my Xbox...
I have IP set to static 192.168.0.102
subnet 255.255.255.0
host 192.168.0.101

On my wireless linksys that hooks into the Xbox i have P1 set to
Static IP 192.168.0.101
subnet 255.255.255.0
host 192.168.0.1
WEP is enabled
Hex Key in field 1
SSID is set to my DLINK ID
On the DLINK I have SSID set to broadcast...cant get it to work if that is not enabled.
Also on the DLINK..I have locked down the XBOX IP AND Wireless Linksys IP Locked to their mac address.

Of course for the directory sharing for streams, I set up a user password for the Xbox and enabled for those directories. This is my setup.  It works great for XBMC,UNLEASH and System Link...Good luck
