Hi,

I know this may sound like an obvious basic question, thanks for humouring me...The R6T3 resistor was removed when my Xbox was on version 4532, it has since been updated numerous times to 9199, and now 12611 without issues.

Is it therefore still possible to install Linux or did I go out of luck the moment I went above 4548 even though no e-fuse will have burnt.

I just booted into Xell and instered the Gentoo Beta 2 disc that I downloaded from the usual place and it got as far as reading devices sra and sda but I get the following message:

"the root block device is unspecified or not detected"

I can open a shell but don't know what to type. I didn't use a modified KK disc first to initiate the exploit, is this the problem?

Thanks...Chris

Ok well i've found numerous threads now stating running linux on 12611 isn't a problem however when it launches I still get the error "the root block device is unspecified or not detected".

It's a Xenon board with Hitachi DVD drive (flashed)

Thanks, Chris.

I am confused, how did you update your 360 from an old firmware to the newest one, without the r6t3 resistor, I recall it blocked you in the middle of the install? Unless you mean you just install Freeboot, in which case, Linux still works for me.

EDIT: I take that back, I never ran Linux with the Kinect update, though I would assume it still works... ran on 8955.

Though this is how I just went to Linux:
Installed Xellous (I didn't care for freeboot or the 360 dashboard at all during this time, but you can install XBR or something(because I know for a fact that works))

Then I burned Gentoo to a cd (not a dvd, don't even think about it)
Then Xellous booted to the cd, and I am in the OS. Then I just installed it by running the ubuntuinstall.sh and bam, I have ubuntu install on my 360 hd smile.gif
Then grab the sda2 boot disc.

Thanks for the assistance so far, I really appreciate all the help biggrin.gif

Yep - I just updated Freeboot from 9199 to 12611 using Flash360 and then installed the $systemupdate from the MS web site via a USB, worked without issue. The RT63 resistor stops accidental updates, and gives an E79 error in such circumstances, but Freeboot updates are fine smile.gif

I am still getting the error message though on the Gentoo Beta 2 Live CD:-

Not sure what to do, my gut feeling is it either to do with the single layer DVD-R I used (didn't realise I could use a CD-R) or the HDD currently attached (250GB). I might put the OEM 20GB drive in and see if this works / burn a new disc.

Chris.

Can you explain exactly how you are getting there?
Like list all the steps, I have never seen that error before... it seems it can't mount your dvd drive for the xbox the original dvd drive? I would just take out your harddrive first and see what happens, the Gentoo livecd does not care about your HD. (Or it can't see that the cd you have is valid, I think the cds I have are cd-r burned at 48x, I'll double check)

Alternatively, type shell and then do wget http://3dslice.net/l...buntuinstall.sh and then do ./ubuntuinstall.sh with your hd plugged in, this is assuming networking is working, which it actually probably isn't at this point...

I load Xell which in turn boots into the Gentoo Beta 2 CD but shortly after seeing the penguins and the initial text the above message appears.

It's a DVD-R I am using, I will re-burning it with a CD-R and with the HDD removed, i'm also going to get the CRC of the downloaded ISO to make sure it's good. If that doesn't work i'll run the script in the shell as you suggest as that is ultimately what I am after (well either ubuntuinstall.sh or lennyinstall.sh).

It might be the weekend now before I can get round to doing it, so will post back then.
