...once I've figured out what danged DVD drive is in it figure out what I need to do to flash the firmware.

I brought a printout of this with me when I was searching for a compatible system.
http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EE...lpEEfSZefFv.php

I share BLKMGK's feelings.  I've got multiple Xbox 1 units with XBMC and have been holding off on a 360 till the first signs of homebrew.  On Friday I picked up a used Premium console (no HDD tho, EB/Gamestop returns all those to corporate) with a 2xxx kernel and Hitachi drive.  Came with wireless controller and component cables too which was a plus.  Picked up King Kong so I could rip it and apply the patch. (even if just using it to access an exploit, I believe in owning the software I'll be using)  Still putting the box through some paces while it is under warranty, will crack it open to flash the drive when I'm comfortable it is solid.  Still have a lot of reading to do regarding this since I am nowhere near as knowledgeable with the 360 platform as I am with the original Xbox hardware.  Want to make sure I don't bone anything while tinkering with this pricey new toy.

Big thanks to the minds that have opened up these doors and continue to advance progress!  It's been a long wait.

Ok, just throwing this out there.  Anyone remember when the XPFS 360 came out.  Everyone bagged on it because "keyboards and mice" are not meant for consoles.  That statement was made very clear by console fanboys.  Now before i go on, i am not claming the same people who bagged on that are the people nutting themselves over this whole linux thing, but here i go...

Linux is for pc's.  Thats about it.  Sure, you can argue that techincally speaking the 360 has the same components as a pc, but for me, and i am sure most people like me, i bought a 360 for the reason of playing console games.  i have a "tweaked" xbox of my own which i love, but that is because it still runs xbox games, and many other console games.  So i guess i am just getting at the hypocracy of most issues with modding the 360 (as of now).  I am not in anyway putting it down this topic, i find it amazing at what people can do with altering systems, being an engineer in study, i love doing that kind of thing as well.

So all in all, i am amazed by this new exploit, but at the same time i just hope it leads to something more console like, to where we can still have live.  So props to everyone who has brought the 360 this far, but i just hope that people aren't going to be so hypocritical about this, because i know a majority of the people in this forum live, breathe, and eat consoles...

would be nice if someone could tell us if you can access the xbox hard drive and copy the arcade games they have bought or if they can upload a 360 game like the demos that come with the 360 when you buy it. I mean maybe its posible just copy all the files where the demos are located and thats it no? or do a DL dvd that boots this demos, that reads the dvd but points to the HD

or just ripping all those arcade games would be sweet smile.gif

This is like the 007 and splinter cell hack now we have access to writing to the box and lots of other stuff.

You really think many are interested in this at this point? Judging from the activity here i would say not. There are less than 10 posts from unique members. If we were really interested this thread would be on at least page 6 by now. Since the majority of us already updated to the new kernel and we are not that dumb to buy another xbox just for this.

Yes you are, you say?

You realise you're on a hacking site? Mainly working towards homebrew exactly like this?

We realise that you have problems, that you're miffed as a useless pirate. "Backups" are losing emphasis. That's the way it was always gonna be. Homebrew is the core of this scene.

This thread/site/community is for those that appreciate this kind of thing. If that's not you, then you're irrelevant to the site. CRY ELSEWHERE.

This thread is not for you to idiotically bitch and belittle the project in. Everyone but you is here out of interest. Your critique is irrelevant and unimportant here. So please... kindly shut yer bitch-hole and butt out.

BACK ON TOPIC of this project

You keep showing us great forward progress

How is the speed on this new full disk, compared to the last release?

I understand it's very early. Are we already able to dabble in a few applications with like-normal speed?

I'll try it for myself when a samsung solution comes along. (And then I'll be like "games what?")

Hoping to see many more of these releases,

with a few more breakthroughs if it's not hoping for too much

Do you have good expectations of more power being unlocked over time?

Many Thanks

For those with a samsung : If you REALLY want to run linux now, open your Xbox360.
Meanwhile, copy all required files (livecd, image.squash) to an usb stick or usb harddisk, and make _sure_ those file are in lowercase.

Then burn a cd, based upon the original livecd, without the squash file, but with an replacement kernel for USB (somewhere floating around also)
Then, Boot Kingkong, Connect USB drive. Press start, Insert modified linux disk.

*wait* until the penquins apears, this can take some little time.
Then, Unplug the sata cable of the samsung (at your own risk!).

You will see some exceptions, but you can go ahead with it.
Now the Bootloaderwill detect your usbdrive and procceeds with booting from that.

Note that usb support is far from stable. So don't try to install a complete gentoo on your usb disc, as it will crash.

Just to clarify here why this should work in theory. When linux starts it classifies usb flashdrives as scsi, the same as the sata cdrom on there already. This should (in theory) make it so that the usb is /dev/sda hence gentoo will find it and boot from it thinking its the boot cd. Unfortunately what most people don't realize this is a hack! The gentoo cd has a bug in the boot scripts that keeps it from properly finding anything that is not a cdrom. I found this out when I successfully tried to make a gentoo liveusb. The fix is just a few edits to one of the boot files, I forget which one right now but do a search of the Gentoo forums, it's there.

Here is a perfect example of what I mean - http://www.cs.wisc.e...mir/gentoo.html

Chances are they could easily make it so you can boot from usb, then everyone could enjoy  wink.gif

This is getting better all the time. I just *wish* the hackers hadn't informed Microsoft about it first, so most of us would have a chance to play with it. Because I would really love that, but I just cant  sad.gif

does anyone know if the samsung capability is going to be coming out, or how had it is going to be to get this compatibility? im sure if will just take some time, but any kind of update would be kick ass.

i just went out and bought the "compatible" sata-pci card, and all the required tools for opening and flashing an xbox. can't wait until this really gets going, keep up the awesome work guys.
no one interested? are you flipping kidding me? all homebrew starts out slow, and then pretty much exponentially grows from there. give it a few more months, and we'll probably be seeing the beginning of XBMC for the 360. w00t!

sure the old school users of xbmc would like to see it running on the 360.but the only problem is you cant burn the xbmc on a dvd/cd becoz there are used files thats always updated if you put a cover for the movies or else...maybe if you can find out how the m$ hdd works,it could be possible...
i had everything mce2005,vmc,and other progs of the open source scene... but xbmc is my favorit toy...  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/love.gif)

The gentoo boot script have no know bugs for now and has no problem to find files on another media. Tser360 posted this because he already did it.

You can find here a kernel i made that will wait for usb device to be mounted if the default kernel dont have the time to, and that should work with usb device formated to ext3, fat32 and ntfs (fat32 drivers correctly added and ntfs not tested). Just follow the tser360 instructions to make it work from usb devices but like he said, i didnt released it for now because usb hdd are buggy right now and can hang randomly.
Also be sure to include the dummy file "livecd" on the usb device since its the file that the gentoo script is search for at the first time.

Awesome it's working (although may be buggy) via USB on Samsung. I managed to get a mobo with exploitable kernel over the weekend, I can put my Sammy in it and use it now. But I also have a Hitachi on it's way (I needed a drive for that mobo anyway) so I'll be able to run Linux tonight or in a few days either way.  smile.gif

Props to Cpas and Tser360 for helping with getting it working on Samsung (and all the hard work Cpas has been doing overall).  beerchug.gif

Nice that the USB is working.  CDR/DVDR media is generally cheap enough, but if I've already got a 1GB thumb drive kicking around unused it will be a lot easier to drop the latest LiveCD onto that USB stick then have to make a new optical image each time.  Should have the possibility of a 4GB "thumb drive" via an SD card and USB reader soon giving even more space for the distro, providing that the buggy-ness is bearable.  Just want to give my used 360 a bit more time for standard MS approved use testing while it is still under warranty, then I'll be deflowering it and booting Linux. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I had seen another thread about installing to the SATA HDD, surprised this hasn't made X-S frontpage yet.
