Microsoft has renamed its Xbox Live Silver Membership, which will now be called Xbox Live Free Membership, tweets Graeme Boyd, Xbox Community Manager of Europe. The changes come as part of the company’s overhaul of the Xbox.com site.

The new Xbox website already features the updated lingo, but the actual Xbox 360 console dashboard will not reflect the new wording until it is updated sometime this fall, reports JPS.

It free because you don't get anything. Please don't tell me that demos and marketplace movie downloads are worth anything. Seems like MS is really trying to distinguish between Gold and Silver.

Hopefully silver can be just onling gaming and cost next to nothing.  Hard to justify paying for any MMOs while you are also forcing payment of gold fees..

Wait, do you mean the 3 free one months that normally come on every Xbox that you can get when signing up in the dashboard? I really hope they didn't somehow get rid of those.

aren't mmo's able to be played on silver (well, on "xbl free")? i seem to remember reading that about FF11 when it came out. i personally find ~$3 for just about any game much more acceptable than $10-$15 for one single game, so i don't do mmo's.

You don't get anything? You get friends lists, chatting, messaging, etc.. This all requires bandwidth and it costs one who has said membership nothing. I'd say that's a pretty good deal.

I really don't get all of the Microsoft bashing that goes on in these threads. I wholeheartedly believe that the service is worth far more than $50 or $60. The only reason I pay less is because I know I can if I catch a good sale on 12 month Gold cards every couple of months.

i think they are trying to play up the fact that silver is free to encourage more people to sign up
