Major Nelson's Xbox Live Account Hacked Over the Weekend
« Reply #45 on: March 30, 2010, 12:03:00 AM »

Haha, I accidentally hijacked a Bungie account once. Don't ask, lots of experimenting and "I wonder if"s
The worst, I got console Banned for three months right around when ODST came out too, so of course since it was on the same server, I was banned there too.
I miss that old account, one of the first in ODST to make it to 3 million in firefight, that took all of 9 hours, loved it!

seeing as how much publicity its getting, I believe it. If it were just the video, I would have called FAKE, cause that can easily be replicated with a hex memory editor, local HTTP/PHP/script/database hosting and calling from Microsoft's Xbox Live database to fill in all the "blanks"

here is an example of what Im talking about.

I dont understand why people would say this is funny .. if this is true it means that noone's account is save anymore. Several of my friends accounts got hacked over the years resulting in us all using prepaid cards instead of creditcards.

I wouldn't consider guessing the answer to his e-mail's security question (which is what he most likely did) "hacking". I'd call it "guessing".

Haha, exactly.. That's all the security/hacking scene is now a days. Maybe I scan with metasploit and I quick look on SecurityFocus.

Yeah this is definately bad news.  If he truely did hack it and not just guess a password or secret question answer, none of our accounts are safe.  I have no idea some obnoxious kid could do this, but I don't really find it funny.  I am more or less concerned about the safety of my information (credit card, home address, stuff like that).

Honestly I wouldn't be too worried.. If the Xbox Live services was exploited then the hack would have been more indept... Imho probably would have been dumped and accounts would have started to sold by the 100Ks on the blackmartet.

I don't find this funny simply because they fixed his shit right away, what if that was one of us? they would have said " your account can't get hacked, you bought the shit that was ordered on xbox live, sorry sir we can't help you" but this fucking cornball works for the company and didn't have to press one for english or talk to "max" please microsoft don't get me started!

Actually my brother stupidly gave his email/password to someone who decided not to give it back. He was able to get it back through phone support. They also refunded the points that had been used to change his gamertag. They actually gave him the password to the Live account the gamertag was switched to. Which included an email with a MySpace password.

Damn. He had his phone number right in front of him. Certainly not saying I know how or have any inclination to do this but were it me I'd be off to walmart for a pre-paid cell in a blaze. Can't pass up an interview opportunity like that.

Phone number is no big deal - it's probably his cell, which he more than likely uses for work, which means he's always on it anyway. People who work in entertainment (whether you're the entertainer, or someone involved in bringing it to the consumer), you're used to people having your number that you've never met, so it's not like having it posted somewhere else is going to significantly add to any drama. I work in music, and my number is printed on every CD I have something to do with - the only calls I get are usually from people who want me to work on their projects, anyway. I guess most people are mature enough to realize that there's not much point to prank calling, other than some [retarded] fun, and even then, it's not a drastic inconvienince to the victim.
