Perhaps Some New Info Re: Hdd Disable
« on: November 21, 2009, 01:06:00 PM »

Guys,

Just thought I'd throw in this info, should it help in the attempts to fix the crippled HDD.

I have two 360s, one that got banned a couple years ago and one that got banned recently. My older one has the NXE on it, and has played as new as Forza 3 / Operation Flashpoint. The problem with it is it's had the RROD before a couple times, so it's not a stable system.

I took my 120gb drive from my newly banned system (with HDD cripple), and put it into the older one. I turn it on and get this message:

"To proceed, security and program updates are required. System updates will be added to ensure security and proper functionality. If you decline, you will be returned to the Xbox Dashboard. Do you want to accept the update?"

I, of course, choose no.

Then I went into Operation Flashpoint, and I was able to install to HDD - it was not disabled. Since that older 360 is unstable, it doesn't play for very long before locking up.

So what I want to know is whether this might help un-cripple my newer system (via NAND flashing or whatever), or whether this information is just retreading old ground at this point? I could care less about the ban, but the HDD install makes things work MUCH better (and quieter!) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I apologize if this has already been covered at length - I seem to have a bit of trouble trying to search the forums. Just hoping this might help!

Cheers,

Al.

PS - I think my old 360 must have ixtreme 1.4 or something (it was bought modded), whereas my new one has ixtreme 1.6.

In-game load to hdd functionality is different than installing a game to hdd via the dash. I've read that you can still use in-game load to hdd with a freshly banned console as well.

Edit: Apparently, in-game load to hdd doesn't actually install the entire game to the hdd. The dashboard install method does.

i could be wrong here... my understanding is that a currently updated xbox live console will corrupt the save data from a banned console, but it will still allow game installation to the banned console's hdd(after a format).

since your old banned console does not have an updated console revocation list, it makes sense that it would behave normally with the newly banned console's data because it has no way of knowing that it is supposed to revoke it.

it is unlikely that the update would corrupt your hdd's data, but if you have a way of backing up the data, it would be a good test(though not necessarily vital).

This is still wrong. Newly banned boxes lose the ability to sign content (they're no longer "trusted"). This has nothing to do with any "revocation list".

ironlord, "went into Operation Flashpoint" reads like you installed it from within the game and not the dashboard. If this is correct, then fixitman is correct. Please clarify.

Folks,

My apologies - I didn't mean to cause confusion.

What I did was go to the dashboard on my older xbox, and choose "install to HD" for Operation Flashpoint, and (last night) Assassin's Creed II. It didn't prevent the install like the newer xbox, so there-in lies my post. I was hesitant to run that update because it might 'enable HD crippling' which would be annoying (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) You can bypass the update screen, and games still seem to run fine (albeit freezing up cause the xbox is unstable).

I guess it's worth mentioning that the update message is directly linked to the Hard Drive, as it doesn't ask this message when the HD is not connected.

I just thought that this information might be able help me get my newer xbox able to install to HD again, perhaps by flashing data from the old to the new one? And if that's the case, the flash data could help other people in a similar predicament.

ironlord, The ban only affects things done one the banned box. So you can still create content (HDD installs, saves, etc.) on the older/random RROD box. You cannot put another box's NAND image on your box without changing the keys in it to match the destination box. However, check out the link below if you're still in need of restoring your newly banned box's signing capabilities.
