I have an old 2006 machine that was banned back during the first wave in 2007. My dashboard is 7371, the one that comes on the disc of wave 3 games.
Now I have to update the dashboard to play the new wave 4 games, but I've read reports about people losing the ability to install games on the harddrive after being banned. Will my machine suffer the same fate if I update the dashboard, despite it being banned and offline a long time ago? If you have an old banned console with the latest-ish dashboard, please respond.

Not an expert but yes..... I used my HD in my non-banned box and moved it over to my banned one. Like  a moron I let it do an update or whatever and since then no installs on HD. Same with the use a profile on banned one and move it to a good one it shows as corrupted. Put it on the banned one, and it works fine so it has to be the update.

Not sure if the same applies to an update off a game CD.

well there you go, its the dashboard that disables the HDD, NOT the console itself.

Thanks for your reply. Do you remember when the machine was banned, or at least if it had the old blades dashboard or NXE?

But the interesting question was if the information is stored on the console itself, or if it was just the newly banned units that got a "signal" to disable the HDD when they tried to connect to Live. Now that we know that it's stored on the console itself it would be interesting to know when they started storing that information, if we could find someone that was banned in the very first wave that has updated their console to the latest dashboard it would be very helpful.

It was banned when it had the old blades one when the bans hit before last xmas. I then installed the NXE off a download when there was that beta out. Like I said when I would swap the HD back and forth between my working and banned box it would ask me on the banned about updating and I'd just say yes since figured who cares it's banned anyway.
