Microsoft Confirms 2 GB Size Limit For XBLA Games

When Xbox Live Arcade originally debuted, Microsoft told game developers that their games couldn't exceed 50 MB in size. Microsoft wanted the games to be easy and quick to download, and that the games be fast, simple, pick-up-and-play experiences.

But Microsoft this week confirmed that, after numerous previous size increases, the size limit has been raised once again, now to a full 2GB, or 40 times that original size. "We are always working closely with our partners to deliver innovative and high-quality Xbox Live Arcade games to our community," a Microsoft rep said in a statement.

The confirmation follows a Tokyo Game Show report from consumer site IGN, that said the 2GB size limit is final, reportedly a technical limitation of XBLA's file structure. Larger games are downloadable on Xbox Live's Games On Demand service, where users can download full-sized retail games like Mass Effect and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Size doesn't matter as long as it is a good game. Would you really want to skip a great game just because it's "too big" ?

Why?  Too big or too small?  If developers make a game much bigger then they might as well go for a full product and make it a normal DVD game release.   On the flip side, arguing that it's too small seems like a silly way to judge any game.

A good move by Microsoft imo.

Anything over 2GB should be on a disc.

Red Alert Commanders Challenge is almost exactly 2.0GB when factoring in the 1000MB/1024MB rule.

it doesnt matter.... if ya dont have the space you have no choice but to skip it. Since a 160gb can be filled up pretty fast, and the 250gb, so far isnt gonnabe released to the public as a stand alone.

all in all the size limit dont matter.. it will keep going up, and microsoft will not be able to keep up with the demand on hard drive space. CHEAP ASSES!! as big as games are now days.... atleast a good 500gig or a 1TB drive would be great then the game devs can GO NUTS and we can GO NUTS on downloading them to our REALLY FRIKEN HUGE DRIVES..

but thats just me......

You can't really ask for a 1TB HDD right now seeing as they are not on the market yet (2.5").
500GB yes, 1TB no.

Haven't there been a few retail xbox games that were less than 2gb? Anything near that size really just needs to be its own retail release.
Xbox live arcade should be for small almost bite-size games, like what we've seen on it so far. Short in content and filesize. (If a game is short in content and large in filesize, then they are doing something very wrong.)

ive got a small one. harddrive that is. i have about 8 gigs left and theres new stuff coming all the time and i really really cant afford a bigger hard drive. car insurance people already have sent out their goons for me!

so please. there is no need for super big games. that doesnt mean that its bad to have a few games bigger than a gig or two but if they all go that way im screwed

There will always be a few people out there who will always want a bigger HDD, I think 120 is a decent size for the average user.  I also hate to think how much a bigger one would cost and the amount of complaining it would bring.

It really should have been that size to begin with - but with the limits on the HD sizes I could see why it was set so low.  120gb is big enough right now - but as you want more games installed on the HD it make any size to small..

Well I hope there are going to be some better longer games (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

So they are trying to tell me that Microsoft can't even figure out how to expand the file size any bigger... They have the most programmers of any company.
