Internet Sharing And The Macintosh
« on: August 09, 2009, 10:23:00 PM »

I have a pretty nice wireless antenna on my Mac Mini so I wanted to use it with my 360. However, it was not easy to get the machines to work together to do this.

There is a short list of instructions on altering a small file that will allow you to get the 360 to work with the Mac for Internet Sharing floating around the internet. What I found out is that they left out one critical detail: the file you need to alter is INVISIBLE. Therefore, you need to make it visible so you can alter it and get the 360 to work with the Mac so you can use XBL.

What I am doing is re-writing this list, adding new information to it, and breaking down the instructions so it will be simpler for noobs to understand.

Here are the steps to getting your Xbox 360 to work with your Macintosh to share a wireless connection:

1. Go to apple.com and acquire the program invisibliX

2. Activate invisibliX and goto Visibility at the top of the page and click on Show hidden files in finder. You should see some new files appear on your desktop.

3. Go into System Preferences and into Sharing which is under Internet & Network.

4. Click on Internet Sharing. You will get a warning asking you if you want to turn on Internet Sharing. Click on Start.

4. Go into Applications and into Utilities and activate Terminal.

5. Type the following command (or copy/paste from here): cp /etc/bootpd.plist /tmp/bootpd.plist

6. Turn off Internet Sharing.

7. Look on your main hard drive for a folder called tmp. Open it up to find the bootpd.plist file.

8. Open bootpd.plist in any text program.

9. Scroll down to the bottom to find the line: <key>reply_threshold_seconds</key>. Beneath it you will find the line: <integer>4</integer>.

10. Change 4 to 0 then save the file.

11. Go back into Terminal and type or copy/paste the following command: sudo cp /tmp/bootpd.plist /etc

12. You will get the prompt to enter your password in Terminal because you are making an administrative change. Once you do that, all will be good.

13. Then startup your 360 and Internet Sharing on your Mac. If all goes correctly you should get onto XBL almost immediately.

14. You may also want to go back into invisibliX and Mask hidden files in finder (under Visibility) and de-activate the program.

Hopefully these re-written instructions will make it easier to use your wireless connection with your Apple Macintosh under OSX 10.5.
