Yep. I didn't want to call to cancel it (well I tried once, but their system hung up on me) and I figured they'd convert me to a silver member. Nope, they just charged it to my account then cut off my service. I ended up paying it off online, since Microsoft's support people were acting incompetent.

What will happen is wht ever money you owe them for that account or gamertag you will have to pay to activate it. If not you will have to create a new one.
