Xbox Live To Get Rich Media, Silverlight Ads Later This Year

While Microsoft is beefing up Xbox Live with social networking tools and more video content for gamers, it's also adding a plethora of new ways for advertisers to reach them. The newest option will be IAB-standard rich media ads, which the company plans to roll out later this year, according to Mediapost. The addition of rich media support--including Microsoft's Silverlight--will make it easier for agencies to create multi-platform campaigns (online, mobile and Xbox Live) without needing to develop separate creative just for the Xbox.

So we basically pay $50/year for a service that is also paid for by selling ad spots?  A for-pay, ad supported service...interesting but if they make it subtle it might not be too bad (which I doubt they will do).  If they make 'pop-up' ads that appear when you go to the My Xbox area for instance, then that would get annoying.

Wonder if they will serve less ads or even no ads on a subscriber that has a gold account so they can strike it up as another perk of being a gold member?

Maybe this is to lower the price of Live and get Silver members some online playtime.

No thanks, I paid for my online, if silver members want it they should pay too.
I don't want extra ads unless they lower the price for the gold service or they put more effort in it (especially EU, we pay more with the current exchange rates and get way less!)

They can start with finally updating the media extender, doing dash updates more frequently and giving a free game to gold members more frequently, not just after a major service screwup or cause some company wants to make a crappy promogame.
It's just not decent to shove advertisements down someone's throat when they paid for a supposedly improved service.

here we go again.

so what's the point in buying theme's?!?

soon you won't even be able to see them as 85% of the dash will be covered up.

looks like Microsoft are missing that additional revenue they got from the old blade ad's.

talk about ruining your new interface!

i think they better call it the NAS|XE (new add supported|xbox experience)

kind of has a nice ring to it  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif)

Looks like I won't be renewing my Gold subscription this year.

So MS has used our money (the consumer) to develop tools to make it easier for advertisers to place their content on Xbox Live, which in turn generates THEM money at OUR expense.

I'd always said I would stay with a paid subscription until advertisements made their way onto the dashboard. I've put up with it until now but since NXE, it's now way outta hand. The new dashboard was never about re-inventing the user interface for the 360 - it was just an excuse to generate more revenue by allowing more ads to be displayed - the blades didn't have the functionality to show multiple ads at once. The Avatar, party mode and install to HDD were just sweetners.

Sorry MS, you'll get no more subscription money from me. Whilst you won't exactly shed a tear over this, I hope others see sense and follow suit. Paying £40 a year (RRP) for p2p gaming is bad enough - I'm not paying for their money-raising adverts too.

I've a PS3 too, which is used as a Blu-ray player - looks as if I'll be getting my online games for this instead.

I will also quit my gold subscription, and disconnect my ethernet cable, if this is the future for XBlive.

Agreed. The ads are getting way outta hand. Maybe Patcher was partially right; the 360 will eventually fall into 3rd place due to over-saturation of ads (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

If the 360 ever gets hacked, maybe we can finally use a competitor like X-Link.

Great, just what I've been waiting for, the new AdBox 360. Can I get a Viagra theme, or MortgagesRUs backdrop?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
