I won't be contributing any great amount to that.  In fact when my gold expires this year I wont be renewing it.   I don't like paying for a something that is flooded with marketing pitches.

Yet they still have tons of ads on the dashboard.  I don't even know why people are paying money to get on Live!, there are still tons of cheaters, a lot of downtime, and games network peer to peer so there is no server involved on most multiplayer games.  Why are they charging for this service?!

Well, when games are free, I guess paying for live isn't that big of a deal.

Seriously though, is this why there haven't been any ban waves lately?  Has M$ finally realized that pirates are pirates, and even though they think they 'lost' a sale, more than likely the pirate would NEVER BUY the stupid game if he had to BUY it?  At least with live, there is no getting around it and you have to pay M$ to be online.

Live is a huge money stream that they cut off when they ban a console.  If 1% of consoles are modded, and 50% of those console have live (and they only pay for live), they still get a SHITLOAD of money.  6mil consoles @ 1% modded = 60000 consoles,  30000 have live, @ $50/year = $1.5 MILLION ANNUALLY FROM PIRATES.  And I guarentee a lot of people buy more than just live from the market place.

I almost want to see another ban wave just to M$ gets less money.

I think banning makes them more money...  if they ban a console, they still have the money, plus the user will probably buy another XBox too and start buying legit games, so they make even more money.  You're a sucker for buying into Live! in the first place...  just like PC, they would make it free if people didn't pay for it.  It's too much of a revenue stream for them, the promotions, the demos, the video service, probably music soon too...  It's like if Apple was charging for iTunes.  That's why the Silver account has all the promotional stuff but no multiplayer... it's too valuable for them to be able to offer it to everyone.  PSN is pretty much caught up, popular multiplatform games and first party games work just as good.  MS could offer the same thing for free and make even more money...  if PSN builds up a bigger network than Live! because it's free, more users will want to play on PSN because that's where their friends are.  It might already have happened, a small percentage of 360 owners have an active Gold subscription, but even more casual PSN users are online, it's more attractive and less of an obstacle to get online.  I even wonder how many 360 owners don't bother getting online because there's no wireless.

WOW, can loyal Gold members now get something better than a friends list and a bunch of ads ?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

I don't mind paying for Xbox Live, it's a great service and even though PSN is free. Half of the people I know don't have a PS3. Most play on Xbox Live. It's a cheaper console, stronger developer support, better controller.

PS3 is just a great Blu-Ray player

My thoughts exactly. The fact that its cheaper alone means more of your friends are more likely to get it.

It is a pretty decent player... that is if you don't have to deal with the HDCP problem like I do.

They'd probably make 2 billion if the hard drive wasn't so damn expensive.  My 12gb drive has one game to play from the hd and is full.  I'm not paying them $189 or even $139 so I can give them more money.
