Rumor: MS survey mentions non-gaming achievements

From xbox.joystiq.com:

Loot Ninja dug up an alleged Microsoft sponsored Xbox 360 survey that brings up some interesting achievement topics. Specifically, questions that inquire about non-gaming achievements (like watching a certain amount of DVDs), having them unlock in-game content and even pitches the concept of having a virtual "in-game way to view your Achievements list." Similar to the proposed PlayStation 3 Trophy Room in Home.

I am not big on achievements, but I don't think this is a good idea.  Points for most dvds, yeah that tells a lot.  I probably watch more dvds then play on my 360 and I still think this is a bad idea.

Wow. Way to get creative MS. I am sick of paying for gold when all we get are features copied from others. First we get Miis..umm sorry i meant avatars. Now they are trying to copy home. I don't even think its that cool. And as for the dvd jokes, the 360 is the worst pos dvd player on the market. I even prefer to use a 10 dollar dvd player from the flee market I bought cause the quality is better. Now the original xbox was a dam great dvd player. Even without the mods, the standard dvd player was not bad. (I had the IR adapter cause it came in the bundle for an extra 10 bucks on release day) The 360 dvd player pumps out at 480p. Its a joke. At least 720p upscaling makes things look better. I am used to watching dvd's upscaled to 1080i so when I watch a 480p movie it looks like crap. And to top it off it just makes the fans spin like crazy. /end rant. I did not even think as I wrote the rant. Ill post it anyways (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) enjoy

Your DVD player must be bad  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) dVd playback is a definite weak point on the 360. I prefer the standalone I have any day.

As for non gaming achievement's, perhaps you should get them for spending so much on MS points or on downloaded movies from netflix (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) ... I smell a way to make people spend money coming up.

go outside and win at a pickup game of basketball

watched some random chick flick on dvd

seriously, i love the gaming achievement culture, but leave it for the games.

how could microsoft seriously have a rationale for letting movies unlock content in games? microsoft isn't getting royalties from these dvd's, so they have no vested interest in seeing them played. also, i don't want to be forced to watch a movie that i may or may not be interested in for the newest multiplayer maps to be unlocked

Not to mention the wear and tear on the drive. Would you rather use your drive's entire lifespan for gaming, or split it between gaming and movies?

Hopefully this article that was 'dug-up' was buried for a reason.  Honestly though, I could never really tell a difference with DVDs no matter what I was playing them on... Now im gonna have to turn my xbox on and test it out.

I have to agree about the wear and tear, I know so many ppl that bought a P$3 for a Blu Ray player, and that is not what a game console is for, it's for games!!!! But you know $ony, they pushed the P$2 as a DVD player too and a gaming unit second and look at those sales.

Augh... Achievement's.

--blip-- You've just completed the tutorial.

--blip-- You shot a bullet.

--blip-- You shot a bullet x2.

--blip-- Your using an automatic rifle; the remaining achievements will be sent to your Windows Live ID email address...

Please check your spam folder.

Now that were getting an "in-game way to view your Achievements list" we can all rejoice as the medium at which we are patted on the back has become more immersive.

Fuck it, i cant wait.

I think ill just rig a bunch of streamers and fireworks up to my 360, wait till i finish the Lost and Damned add-on and then light the fuse... oh what an achievement that would be! Than a whole bunch of firemen will come over and chuck a few buckets of water all over the place in some insane ritual?!?! How immersive is that?!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

Hence the fact that its not just a pure games console. I do use the PS3 for BR simply because the quality is good. But if I only had the 360 as a DVD player I would buy a standalone.
Not really what this article is about though.
