Xbox Live Coast To Coast?

I was just wondering if there might be a difference in playing someone on xbox live who for example, lives in the same state as you, as opposed to someone who lives across the country? I live in NY and would like to play online against my friend in Cali. We both have high speed DSL internet connections. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
