Is This Connection Possible?
« on: November 28, 2008, 09:44:00 AM »

Hey,

I recently got a new 360 arcade, and have moved to a bigger place. My router is a long way from my new room (too far to run a cable) and I can't afford to shell out £50 on a wireless adaptor.

In my room, I have a laptop, which is connected to the internet via wireless. Is is possible to connect the wired ethernet on my laptop to the ethernet port on the 360 and get access to live via the computer.

Someone said it was possible by something called ICT, but I couldn't find anything more about it.

I Mspaint'd a picture to illustrate what I'm on about!

Thanks in advance!

Yes it is possible......but I wouldn't recommend it. I remember when I did it I had terrible issues with the Xbox showing resticted or moderate NAT which made it hard to connect to friends for games, private chat etc.

I found a tutorial, its here :

http://www.devhardwa...ics-167398.html

Explains how to do it. It was ICS, not ICT, thats why I couldn't find it.

ICT is basically the Vista version of ICS, which is why you probably need to search for both at times!

From the PM you sent me, you're saying the 360 is seeing the laptop as a media device but it won't go out to Xbox Live. This is a common symptom of no internet access (no gateway or dns) available for the 360, even though it's elsewhere on the network.

Post the following information:

Router internal IP Address / Subnet mask (e.g 192.168.0.1 / 255.255.255.0)
Laptop IP Address / Subnet mask (e.g 192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.0)
Xbox 360 IP Address, subnet mask and default gateway.

I'm just off to bed (nearly 1am here now) but I'll pick this up in the morning and will see if I can help.

Right, so you've already followed the steps on my previous post and enabled ICS/ICT and changed the IP Address on the shared network port on your laptop to 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0?

Cool, you're almost there. Change your 360 settings to:

IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

DNS Server: 192.168.0.1

This should get you onto Xbox Live.

Changing the IP Address on your 360 shouldn't have affected the network connection of your laptop! Unless of course you've misconfigured ICT.

You're basically looking to share your wireless internet. Since you only have 2 adaptors, it'll use the LAN connection to do this.

Try these steps:

1. Disable ICT/ICS for the time being (if it's already enabled). Unplug the LAN cable from the laptop.
2. Change your laptop wi-fi ip address to 192.168.1.10 / 255.255.255.0. You'll lose internet access - don't worry.
3. Enable ICT/ICS on your wifi connection. This will set the LAN connection ip address to 192.168.0.1 / 255.255.255.0 automatically. Go in and change it to 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0.
4. Change your wi-fi connection back to automatically assigned IP, or manually set back to 192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.0.
5. Set your network IP address on your 360 as I outlined before.
6. Reconnect the LAN cable from the 360 to the laptop's LAN socket.

Your laptop internet should still be working and ICT/ICS should be in play, meaning you should be able to connect to Xbox Live.

Awesome bud, that worked!!!

Its giving me that moderate NAT thing, but I guess I'll have to live with that.

I don't have live gold, so I'm not going to be playing online or anything.

Can I paypal you something for your trouble?

Glad you got it working bud!

Not too sure where I stand on here with accepting payment for help, so I'll politely decline this time around. smile.gif
