Wireless Xbox Live W/o Wireless Router
« on: October 25, 2008, 12:04:00 PM »

I am wondering if there is anyway to hook my 360 wirelessly (sp:S) to live without have a wireless router/modem.  Is there something I can buy that I could hook up to my router/modem or my computer.

You need a wireless access point, like this. However, you could also use a standard wireless broadband router, just don't connect it to the broadband line, make sure it has an address that doesn't conflict with your existing broadband router, and turn off DHCP. Just get whatever you can find cheapest!

Obviously you'll also need the wireless adapter for your Xbox...... smile.gif

You might also be able to use a wireless NIC in your computer in ad-hoc network mode, but there are a couple of things that might cause problems:

1. I have no idea if the 360 wireless adapter can be configured in ad-hoc mode.
2. You would have to set up a network bridge in your PC between the wireless NIC and your wired Ethernet connection, and that can be a nightmare to troubleshoot.

And, of course, it would only work when your computer was turned on!

The access point is by far the simplest solution.  smile.gif

dd-wrt is awsome firmware... i have flashed over 200 routers with this and also have 3 routers in my house using it.  great stuff i have a hotspot at 3 business locations also running this.  if you get 2 access points or 2 routers you can actually use 1 as a wireless adapter for your xbox through your ethernet port! and i can definitely be less than the price of a 360 wireless adapter

i ended up getting an access point from best buy and one of the pelican wireless bridge things.  well i have vista and my computer wouldn't recognize it so i sold it to a buddy for what i paid for it and found a usb xbox one on ebay for $50.  that was a very easy way to go, basically plug two things in and bam, i was on live.  thanks for the help.
