'Gay' Player Name Banned By Xbox Live Posted by XanTium | May 14 14:50 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From consumerist.com: Reader Grant says that his gamer tag "theGAYERgamer" was recently banned by Xbox Live. He hoped that a call to customer support would sort things out but all he received was a confusing explanation from an Xbox Live supervisor. According to the supervisor, it wasn't that she found the name offensive, but it was the "greater Xbox community" that found it offensive. We think you deserve a better explanation than this. Despite what this Xbox Live CSR told you, we're not convinced that it's the "greater Xbox community's" job to classify offensive material. At best it sounds like this "supervisor" was trying to pass the buck. At worst, it's downright homophobic discrimination. Would "theHETEROgamer" also be banned? Full Story: consumerist.com

...if the public cant determine whats offensive, than who can? The corporation? And if they did it, would it make it any more right? Everyone wants to make a federal case of MS's mistakes, maybe a gamertag change might of been in order but a ban is kind of ridiculous. Regardless, people will get offended over anything.

Don't MS also have stupid rules the say you can't have linux in your gamertag or motto. They are very anal and right wing american.

Why is it that necessary to advertise his sexuality? And what/who is he gayer than (as it says the gayer gamer)? It's possible that people were offended by the word 'gay' being a part of his gamertag; even possible it was gay people who were offended.

 Either way, inappropriate names aren't supposed to warrant a ban, but instead a name change. Maybe they're mad they couldn't get him to pony up $10 to change it?

Right wing american, are you serious?  Do your research before blabing at the mouth.  Go rock your vote somewhere else man.  I dont think stupid people should be allowed to vote..its like asking my house keeper how I should diversify my 401k or asking my mechanic to look at a funny looking birth mark on my shoulder.

Strange, I've always been under the impression that 'gay' also means 'jolly' or 'cheerfull' or something like that, but I'm not a native english speaker so I might be wrong. Anyway, personally I don't see why being gay would have to be a problem if you want to play online, but maybe it's just because where I come from we're not so overly sensitive to or offended by homosexuality, or sexuality in general (nipplegate anyone?). Must be some kind of american thing.
