XBL Manager Explains Approach to Punishing Achievement Point Cheaters
Posted by XanTium | March 26 19:10 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Excerpt of an interview with Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten on blog.newsweek.com:
Quote

* When did you decide to take the steps that were publicly outlined today to punish people who are determined to be tampering with their game saves?
* We have always invested in upholding the Live Terms of Use through penalizing violations with user and or console bans. The method of having the individual's gamerscore reset is a more measured approach that addresses this particular form of behavior.

* How granular are your tools for determine whether someone, as your FAQ page states, "has earned achievements by using tools that circumvent the game or avoid game play entirely"?
* We look for abnormal Achievement and gamerscore activity using criteria that identifies members who have used external means to earn Achievements without really playing the game.

* Why did you decide to not only reset a player's Gamerscore, but also publicly label him or her a cheater? Is there any way for someone who has been so punished to have the scarlet "C" removed in the future?
* We want to make sure all Xbox Live members know there are consequences to violating the use of terms by cheating on the service. This label is primarily for verification to the user that yes, your gamerscore was reset due to cheating and can be observed on Xbox.com, and through the player's view of their gamercard on a console or PC connected to Xbox Live. Gamers who are labeled as 'cheaters' are still allowed to legitimately gain future Achievements and the player's experience doesn't change in any other way. Over time, we intend to remove the label - although the original achievements will remain reset. It is up to the individual player to prove that they won't do it again.

* Your adjudication process is secret, and you provide no means whatsoever for appeal, making it something of a star chamber. Aren't you concerned that in your zeal to punish the guilty, you may also ensnare the innocent?
* We only correct gamerscores for players who meet the criteria 100 percent. Like the vast majority of Xbox Live members, if you earn Achievements by playing through games like any other player, then you have nothing to worry about. Gamerscore correction only applies to players who use external means or avoid game play to earn Achievements.

Is it really possible to get achievements without playing games, I don't see how that's possible unless it's some kind of Gamercard editing or something. I'm glad they are stopping cheaters though, now if they could only do something about boosting. That's the only reason I hate online achievements, that and the fact that everybody just gets the online achievements and don't worry about actually playing the game.

yeah well you used to get them off the internet before they changed the save files are tied to your console. So now even if you dowload new savefiles you will probably set off the cheater detector..

Yeah, but you would still have to play the game to do that. I'm sure they have a workaround for that by now.

Yeah and here is M$ stating  they know all about it and can see EXTERNAL methods of cheating.

Editing gamesaves and increasing your achievements externally is able to be seen.
They may not be able to stop it from happening but they can find the people when they do it
somehow someway and will show them as a cheater.

When are they going to label themselves as cheaters and reset their DRM policies?  I feel like I've been cheated out of much DLC due to losing my internet connection and having to replace a RROD 360.

But unfortunately I know where MS's priorities are and is a reason why I will never purchase another piece of DLC from them ever again!   Not to mention simple things like can't watch a DiVX movie without being connected to Live.

Thank the gaming gods that there are alternatives ala Sony, Nintendo and PC.

What do you mean you can't watch a DivX movie when you're not connected to XBL?  It works fine for me.  ?!?!

this is so stupid. i dont know why people give a crap about achievement points anyways. if someone has a lot of points, it only means they have more time to play games than others do  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

if someone is 100% guilty of tampering to get higher points, they should get banned.

damn it, man!
you definitely are so dumb, i need to respond.
that has nothing to do with nazis!!! it's not even close in any way!!!
if you play cards and you get to know you lost your cash this time not for being so stupid as you obviously are but because someone cheated on you, then that's fine with you, huh?
you wouldn't go get your money back, would you?
because if you did, then you would be the nazi!!!
do you get it?
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my 2 cents.

as for the topic:
thats correct to mark the cheaters!
i hate these people playing to a specific point of the game where they get the achievement and immediatly log off.
i like playing games for the fun of it and that is a funkiller.
also, achievements are important for some people.
so EARN them or shut up!

lol are you serious  about your 2 cents........

You would think they would be focused on more than a gamer score seriously because we all have seen this type of issue before....someone is going to be reset that should not of ( kind of like being banned for no reason last year )

what about those in game boosters........ cod4 halo3 rb6-1 rb6-2

really i dont care about thier new bs they are pulling........heil Bill Gates!

M$ needs to focus on that pos that they call a 360

They should change the "C" label to "FS"  for fucking sad. Srs, artificially increasing a score 95% of people don't care  about (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Though, as DeMoN_DARREN  says, you can totally get a larger penis so if that's the aim I encourage  people to get Jumper, as you get at least 9000 points for just booting that game ... But  don't play it or you'll be cockless from leprosy transmitted by the sheer  amount of fail contained therein.
