Xbox or PC Stolen? Don't Forget to Cancel Your Credit Cards

You walk into your home and make an anguishing discovery - you've been the victim of a burglary. Besides your TV, some jewelry and your PC, the thief got away with your Xbox 360 video game console.

Granted, it's not a good situation, but if you stop after calling the police and your insurance agent, the burglary could get even worse. If you've used your credit card to open an account on Xbox Live, the thief could be downloading games and buying points. Because your credit card is tucked safely in your wallet, you may be none the wiser.

The Belgian gamers' blog Fragland.net has reported just such an occurrence in Canada. It is advising its readers to keep credit card information off their game consoles.
The post raises an important point in this era of e-commerce. Our fictional burglary victim might also be vulnerable to credit card theft when a computer is lost or stolen.

more reason why we should be able to remove credit card info off our consoles.  Though another thing is if my console was stolen I would just recover my account asap from my friends console to get it out of someone else hands.  My friends original xbox gamertag was stolen before.  He had it on a mem card at a LAN party and someone bought a TON of xbox live arcade games(the one for original xbox) and DLC for games.

ive never attached a card to my account.. sure its easier to just spend away with a linked card, but you can just as easily get codes emailed instantly on ebay for retail or lower (if only slightly).

come on, its Microsoft!

Why don't we have the friggin option of removing a credit card from the account unless i'm overseeing something!? I was sitting here earlier today trying to figure out how to take it off andit seems like there's no way to!   grr.gif

But ya they should give you an option to remove it without formatting your harddrive.
The only way to remove your CC info from an XBL account is by calling xbox customer support (formatting won't help, it only removes the account files from the HDD and not the account itself). I think XBL should ask for some basic details and/or password when you're about to buy something instead of just charging your card directly.

I have my debit card to my 360 but im a student so there's never much money in it and no overdraft so haha if they steal it, I also write down all of my console/gadget serial numbers so if it is stolen the police know if it's mine or not.

Also MS should by law? allow cards to be removed from the system?

Surely thats an invasion of data protection act in the UK?

As bad as it would be to have people buying things on your account wouldn't it also be possible to track down who has your xbox from the IP address logged with M$ when your xbox connects to live?

not really, though they could get as far as general location and ISP. Maybe if they subpoenaed the ISP for more info, though I highly doubt MS or the police would even bother with it.

well, the worst is stillt o come!

i rang M$ up a few weeks back about my mums credit card info on my console.
(i don't have debit/credit cards cos im shit with money!)

anyways, they had done to me the same as the guy a few posts up, they had renewed my year subscription, and also added the xna creators club, even though i never went near it!
BUT THE BEST BIT!? THE EXPIRY DATE ON THE CARD HAD PASSED, YET THEY STILL PROCESSED IT!

when i rang them up to find out exactly how they had done this, they explained that it isn't the credit card number they store on file, it is the account information relating to that card. So, even if your card expires and you forget about it, they can still take money from your account for "upgrades" or "renewals" whenever they like.

i reported this to watchdog recently, who replied saying this wasn't an isolated case and they were "looking into it"

so, in short, if possible, try to buy all your M$ points or live subs from a shop, rather than add a credit/debit card! at least until they let you remove them anyways

I just went into membership info screen and changed all the credit card info to bogus info Ie name street and card number not to mention the  verification 3 digit code and it saved over old real card data.

I realised way back on the old XBOX that you couldnt remove your CC... so on 360 it has been prepaid all the way. They still have my old expired debit card # which is useless now.

As far as the PC goes, I'd be fucked!, unless I got to the internet before they did!

EASY SOLUTION:
  1. Go onto Xbox.com and change your account (Windows Live) password
  2. Go to a friends house and recover your Gamertag there
DONE!

Recovering your Gamertag on another console will invalidate your profile on your stolen console, changing the password will add that much more security in preventing them from recovering it back.

Really, it's not that difficult, this isn't rocket science...

Don't they charge bank fee's in the UK?  Here we would get screwed I can have 0 money in an account and if somone charges to it I get hit with a $35 fee for EACH transaction.  I alot more then the stupid $4.00 purchase would be.

I never posted about this, but I had this happen exactly.  The difference is that I was no longer using live for a bit, but my OLD debit card was in there.  I got a letter from my old bank demanding payment for charges on an old account, and then I got a letter from microsoft stating that I owed them for a couple thousand points that payment got declined on.  So yeah, watch out, lol.  Oh, and microsoft did reverse the charges, and they banned the box from live, poor guy.

not over a 360 they wouldn't, unless it was some serial burglar that might have raped somebody or something
