I'm sure MS struck a deal with Chair entertainment to supplement any loss income for the free game. It would explain why you only get one choice of game.

Of course they did... businesses love giving out stuff (especially copies of stuff with no physical expense attached) because it gives the appearance of value without costing much...

That's why restaurants are happy to comp a meal to make you happy... the actual cost to the restaurant may be $3 but you feel like you got $20 because that's what it would have cost you...

Same here... MS is choosing to give a away a game because we all feel like we got a $10 game for free while MS shells out probably $.25 cents per copy.

It's even better when it's something like licenses to a game, because if someone came into that restaurant and wanted to buy whatever they gave you for free, they might be out because they gave it to you... but MS has no such problem... those who sign up for live after whatever the cutoff date may be can still buy the game full price at no problem... not to mention it will have skyrocketed on the charts since so many people get one free.

Good chance MS will recoup much of it's loss giving away copies to people who have friends playing it on live and buy a copy to play with them (I think there is a live mutliplayer isn't there?).

It's called buying consumer happiness and it works surprisingly well.

Hi I'm a Microsoft employee and I wanted to take the time to let all you good people out there in Xbox land know that we really care about you which is why we've decided that you all should have one of the worst games you can get on xboxlive arcade *cough cough * I mean one of the greatest games. I mean with so many people not buying the game because they played the demo and thought it was shit and deleted it straight away, we just had to give it away as well there was no other way we were going to push it * oh shit cough* that is to say that so many people playing the demo and thinking that it was great but not being able to afford it that we thought we would give it away * phew close one* anyhoo I just wanted you all to know that we really appreciate you all taking the time to read this pile of shit and i hope yo all enjoy playing a piece of shit game that none of you will really want, we could have just credited all active gold accounts with 800 MS points but come on like you fools are worth that much trouble hell we'll probably ban a few of you for complaining and just make out you had your 360 next to an outside fan and that violates something we can make up and add on to the T's & C's later with out informing you ha ha ha suckers!!!

from actual me

might we put a little something together to say while we appreciate the gesture( thanks to the media coverage) that, while this game is fine for some of us there will no doubt be a lot of people that this game has no interest for. satisfying  some of the XBL community while leaving others hungry for some kind of meaningful compensation is unfair at best. I like that XBL is a paid for service because it means a nice high standard of service, the old you get what you pay for expression comes to mind. Microsoft messed up ALOT of people's holiday season, people with time off from work that usually dont have that much free time off, people who just bought the system wanting to have fun with their family at Xmas time. Its not like this was just any old outage this was at a time when they KNEW and infact banked on getting a lot more turn around therefore they should have been ready for it. its not the end of the world that some people didnt get to play live over Xmas but it was Xmas and like I said there was a lot of people that wanted to chill out with family with few days off work that couldn't because they didnt hold up their end of the deal. and lets face it with all the other stuff Xbox360 has put most if not all of us through I think it would have been a small price and more sincere gesture on MS's part that they did credit all active at the time gold accounts with 800 ms points so that people may choose their own game.

Just my 2 cents

Hmmm, wonder what will happen when everyone tries to download an arcade game at once.

if so, then ah, the irony...

why people complain about anything and everything is completely beyond me - the game is free - so just take it or leave it...i just need to set myself a reminder to download it during the "free" time period...

Of course I'm in a different state to my xbox until the Monday after the deal expires! Probably a silly question but is there any way I can activate my xbox live account to register the full version game for me without physically downloading the game at home on my xbox?

I love this part
Because the realm of aquatic based shooters was so well established it takes a lot to redefine it! LOL

Hah, I was thinking the same thing.  Talk about marketing fluff, that's just an embarassing statement to make.  I certainly hope it was made to intentionally sound humorous.  Seriously, what is the competition?

I did kind of like "Treasure Chest" on my Atari 2600.

its one thing after another with MS.  maybe thats why me and my gf both canceled our XBL service.  one free game for the both of us on a single xbox, wtf?  wow, we dont even get to choose the game, dang.  so after i dl this undertow, how will she be compensated?  i play halo 3 multi-player, not arcade games, in no way imo is this an acceptable compensation for loss of playing time, heck we dont even get a choice of a game.

our response to this is, we will NOT renew our gold memberships till jan 2009.  a 1yr MS ban.  estimated loss MS would be from 100-191usd.  i can't think of any other way to say hey MS your business practices are wrong, and if they are unwilling to compensate us for our losses, we will not purchase their services.  and lets not talk about their hardware.

its great to play together, when we can play together, but their not gonna get my buck.  looks like its back to xlink and xbconnect for a bit.

this is kind of pointless.  so for those of that already purchased this title when it was first released, a month or so ago, we really get no form of compensation for the live downtime so we are just sol?

why not allow users to download a game of their choice, ie: not one we already have paid for.  i guess we are supposed to just wait before purchasing stuff from live cause there may be a chance we will get it for free in the future.

this is really a piss poor idea from microsoft.  here i always defend them and have defended them on the live issues, yet i get no compensation for my downtime from live.

the easiest thing for microsoft to have done is just adjusted all live accounts to expire or renew a month later than they are set to, give users a free month of service instead of offering us a free download of a game i already paid 800 ms points for...
