Is It Safe To Connect Directly To Modem?
« on: December 19, 2007, 03:59:00 PM »

My 360 connection is connected to a router, which is connected to a modem.  I lose my connection while playing madden quite often.  If I hook the wire directly from the Xbox to the cable modem, bypassing the router,
(1)is it safe to do so?  Viruses from the internet, etc...
and
(2) will this give me a better connection?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am not very familiar with live as I have only been hooked up for a couple of months.

Thanks!

1. You can't remotely hack or give viruses to videogame systems, so no.
2. It depends. If you don't forward the following ports for Xbox live in your router:

•   UDP 88
•   UDP 3074
•   TCP 3074

Then you will sometimes get connection problems. It shouldn't kick you out of the middle of games though.

Agreed on point 1.

Agreed on point 2, except I would recommend turning on UPNP on your router so the xbox (360 at least) can configure the router as need dictates.  If you port forward as Boba Fett suggests, you should make make the xbox's IP static.
