Xbox Classics region locked downloads?

After running through the system update I attempted to purchase Magatama [with a Japanese Silver account on a Xbox360 located in the US]. I haven't played it before so I was looking forward to giving it a go. I got ready to expend 1,200 Microsoft Points when an error message popped up explaining the download was not available in my region. The same problem occurred with Puyo Pop Fever. I turned off my 360 and tried again, but this time the option to download the games was not present. I was able to download the freebies (themes and icons), but it appears Microsoft closed off a path to downloadable import games.

They've been doing this with downloads for a while now.  I have a US 360 and US XBL account, but I live in Japan because of work.  I can't download anything from the US Marketplace and strangely enough, I can't download the Bioshock demo.  I haven't tried the original Xbox downloads yet as I already have the games I want, but I would suspect that the US games would be restricted for me.

The solution would be to set up a computer on your network as a gateway and have that computer move everything over a foreign proxy (or an SSH tunnel or something similar).  I haven't tested this as I really don't care any more, but I am pretty sure that would work.

i know that they have been doing this with marketplace content for a while now, but i am not sure why they would want to limit the regions of the older xbox games and prevent people from purchasing them in other countries...unless there are still some laws/regulations in place regarding their sale...

They're stupid, I must say. :-\ I'm from Brasil, the console was officially released here but the Live wasn't. I really can understand they preventing us to download movies and series, but games? Doesn't make any sense. I had 1600 MS Points today and I bought Pac-Man CE (Excellent game, I must say!) and Street Fighter. Screw you, Microsoft!

What kind of law would be in place to prevent games from other regions to be played in the U.S.? (or any other country). As far as I am aware of, many games don't make it to other countries due to lack of interest or lack of translators.

I think it makes sense. I know with the original xbox playing games from other reasons caused issues so I guess the same applies here. What does suck is that if you have a US console and you're in another country you can't download US games.

I however have my own issue: 8016aba5
I have no idea what this error is and when I try and look it up all i get is german forum posts related to the issue. So if someone can tell me what it is that would be great.

AFAIK it needs to obtain a local rating.

Argh, these ratings seem to cause more harm than good. What you said makes a lot of sense, so I do think you're correct. And tommy: you do know you need a flashed drive to play backups, correct? But I believe you may be onto something...

Why not just buy the actual disc game then?
In most cases it will be cheaper that way.
