COD4 Beta 2nd Profile Exploit: 23k used it, MS Fixed It and LIVE Bans for 24h Posted by XanTium | September 6 00:47 EST | News Category: Xbox360

An internal Microsoft source sent us this exclusive info about the COD4 Beta '2nd Profile Exploit': There was an exploit (it's been resolved), in the call of duty 4 beta. The public beta had 100k valid participants who qualified and were provided special tokens which allowed them to download the COD4 beta from marketplace. There was an exploit that enabled valid beta participants to sign in with their accounts on a different machine, use their beta token and download the beta. The beta was then fully functional for any LIVE profile on that 2nd machine (even after the beta participant's account was removed).  Approximately 23k consoles were used to take advantage of this exploit to illegitimately access the COD4 beta. The exploit has been fixed to prevent any additional users from illegitimately accessing the COD4 beta. The current POR is to issue a 24-hour console lockout that will prevent these 23k users from using their consoles to sign in to LIVE.  These users will also receive a message in the dash with an explanation as to why their console has been locked out for 24 hours for violating the LIVE TOU [Terms of Use] and a warning that more severe actions may be taken if they attempt a similar action in the future (console could be banned permanently, etc.). Again, this is not a permanent console ban - it's more of a "slap on the wrist" and a warning to these 23k users who used this exploit

I would have gone ballistic if they banned us for good, this is still a dick move on their part though, fix the glitch and lock us out is the only thing necessary. Punishing me for their mistakes seems unfair.

If you were too lazy to go to the website and sign up when you had the chance you honestly deserve to miss out. If you live in a different country, it sucks to be you.

This is certainly something huge though. I do agree that the ban is extreme. Has something like this EVER happened before on any console for something so minor as this?

It's only 24h, seems like a fair punishment for violating the ToS.

while initially it may seem like a bad move PR-wise, the temporary ban is in the end a good thing.  One of the biggest (if not the biggest) attraction of the xbox live service is that you are able to play in a controlled environment protected from outside influences.  People who violate the TOS by accessing content they are not entitled to weaken that, and MS has a responsibility to demonstrate that such behavior will not be tolerated.  Not to mention the fact that people who exploited the loophole effectively stole.  So a 24h ban seems perfectly reasonable IMO

Woah, woah! Wait a second. Microsoft fucks up by leaving a loophole/ open exploit and WE get "banned" FUCK THAT! And secondly, shouldn't it be the people who used their invite codes to allow others in, be the ones who get the slap on the wrist? Because they're the ones who have the TOS not US......   Low blow MS, low blow.... They should have just fixed the loophole and gone about their business. Typical dramatic actions from M$......

Anyone using the beta through this exploit used it on Live, and the story even says the 24hr ban is for violating the Live ToS, so yes, you do have the ToS, you did violate it, and they can punish/suspend/ban your account for it.

I think it's very reasonably for a 24 hour ban. I mean come on, thats 24 hours to get back a social life.

I just wish I wasnt under a rock when they announced you could sign up on a site for a beta key...

I mean, you exploited a mistake that they made.  You bastard, you took advantage of THEIR mistake.  I mean M$ would NEVER take advantage of their own mistake would they?


I mean they wouldn't do something underhanded like say send you a used console after you sent a brand spanking new one in would they?  Like say you bought a 360 and 20mins later it craps out, you send in the NEW 360 the next day and recieve a used one a week later.

Man, you guys deserve being banned.  Bad bad CUSTOMERS.

I just wanted to say that I have one of the 'glitch' profiles on one of my boxes, and deserve the ban, but I do have a second box that was not even on during the time I was 'playing' with the download, and both boxes were banned.

I do work for Microsoft, and did complain about this, and was hoping to see news like this.

I have one box that has been banned for 49 hours now, and another sitting banned for 32... Do we have word where this news will be announced, and when this ban is lifted/started 'officially' and not 'inside'?

I have not seen any internal notices as such yet.
