Almost a Third of 360 Owners Don't Know Xbox Live Arcade Exists
Posted by XanTium | August 13 23:00 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From biz.gamedaily.com:
Quote

We present data here from a national online survey of 1800 U.S. households, of which 149 owned an Xbox 360, over 64% of whom indicate they play games online with their Xbox 360. We also present data that shows that 70% of owners have used Xbox Live Arcade - both to try free games, as well as to buy games. However, the larger group (42%) have only tried out free games. While 28% have actually bought a game at XBLA

But remarkably, 30% of Xbox 360 owners report that they have never even heard of XBLA. Considering these buyers of the Xbox 360 are serious, if not hard-core gamers, and all the attention given to XBLA, it is surprising to us that still almost a third of Xbox owners are not familiar with XBLA.

well parents do buy consoles for their kids and then do not do enough research to see what the system exposes them to

This poll is hardly of any relevance, there is not enough people involved, I mean basically they took 1800 random people, of which ONLY 149 people owned a 360, that is fine and all, but they made a mistake of then taking that 149 people, and continued to ask them additional questions that pertain exclusively to 360 users.  So  they are basing their poll that a third of 360 users don't know about XBLA off of 149 people total?  If that is truly the numbers that they are going off of, then that is completely, irresponsible use of statistics, and those people should be taken out and shot.

Now if this short article here just misrepresents what actually happened, then I digress.  But polling a mere 149 people for anything that has as large of a customer base as Xbox 360 is just shear irresponsibility.  That would be like electing the president with a very small percentage of the population... oh wait that damn Electoral College... <sarcasm>ok well by that way of thinking, I guess it is legitimate.</sarcasm>

why dont we ask the 11million xbox360 owner that Question.Because 7million xbox360 subcribers know about xbox live. the other 4 million people either dont know about xboxlive or they dont like play against other people or maybe to cheap to fork over the 50$ bucks a year. I am currently downloading the Bioshock demo so yes I do know about xbox live. some people are missing out on half the fun of the xbox360 if they dont have live.

I think it's kind of hard to own a 360 and not know about live, what with the live blade and all  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

For one, this is a ridiculously small sample to come out with this claim.

Also, they don't give the figures for errors in that percentage. I'd say +/- 20% or more because I don't think the survey is very accurate at all.

You also have to figure in that not everyone who plays XBLA knows it's name, knows the name as "XBLA" or "Xbox Live Arcade", etc. and thus may have answered that they don't use it because they didn't recognize it's presentation in the survey.

Lastly, who cares? MS even wouldn't care that much considering they're still banking HUGE on XBLA this generation. On Xbox1, XBLA was a joke (mostly because it was TRUE that most Xbox owners never heard of it or knew how to access it) but on the 360 it's a huge money maker for MS.

If it was true that that many people truly haven't heard of XBLA, and I've already shown how it's very unlikely to be true, then I'd advise MS to make small changes like maybe a TV commercial once a month to advertise the newest XBLA titles. Something like that.

Yet another stupid 'news article' that gives MS and the 360 bad press. It's almost like people in the media are finding any way possible to create bad news for MS (and Sony, too).

Youd probably get better results from a poll taken from GameFaqs or something.

That study is pointless imo, unless they were trying to prove a specific point about parents who buy for their kids. I think they need to ask the people who play the system, since people are presenting this information as that.

This study is true with almost any product. I buy presents for family members all the time, doesn't mean I know about it. I bought my cousin a harry potter book, yet, I don't know anything about the series.

another little detail the forget to mention is, how many of those 360 owners dont have broadband? I know its hard to believe, but there is still a LARGE majority of people who still run Dialup. So if they dont have broadband, why would the bother finding out about XBLA?

There's three options:

* Tried games for free but never purchased
* Purchased games using XBLA
* Never heard of XBLA

Let's see, what's missing... oh, how about "Have heard of XBLA but never tried it"? Honestly, what would someone in that situation choose? Probably the third option, but who knows. Come on, Frank N. Magid Associates. And come on, GameDaily, for making a big deal (and a sensationalist headline) out of this.
