Game developers debate Xbox achievements

I think the only thing wrong with achievements is when they have the online ones (not coop just online).  Online should be about whos the best not I need to get 100 kills with this certain gun and if someone steals my kill I'm going to yell at them for an hour in my high pitched voice.

I'm all for single/coop achievements because if I bought the game maybe I do want to go through it again and you know sometimes I need the goal of achievements to make me start up the game again.  Or with games like Oblivion/Crackdown it leads to me experiencing the game on a new level because of side quests or in terms of Crackdown just goofing around.

I can see his point... however, I still love the achievement system.  I'm not an achievement whore and I rarely go out of my way to get one, but I still can't help but feeling a little warm and fuzzy when that message pops on the screen.

The solution?   Make the game first with no thought put towards achievements.  Create whatever epic story and emotional rollercoaster that you wish to create.  Then later, come in and add achievements.

somewhere between the end of the ps1's lifecycle and the launch of the ps2 games lost their appeal to me. the games were bland, unentertaining, and lost soul. it wasn't the same type of games i grew up with, not the same challenges, different peers, things were just different. however, the 360 has brought back that appeal. the guy is right, developers shouldn't have to rely on achievements for gamers to play their games but, you know what, 90% of the games suck. that's just all there is to it. and what's the point of having a global gaming system with no competition? competition is what drives us to do better. why does a game developer go to extreme lengths to make a great game, not only because they want to but because they want to be better than the rest. why do i play geometry wars so much? because i want to be able to compete at the top. this man is confused about what a game is and why people play, that is why he doesn't like achievements.

Hmm, I also agree with this.  I can see your point totally. As a mature gamer myself, with a job, family and friends as well, I don't have the time either. And some of the acheivements are really silly you are certainly correct there. Multiplayer ones are what really drive me nuts.
I can see how there are 2 sides of the story here. But, I do believe, if you don't want to get the darn things, then just don't. That is what i do, unless I really do like the game and then it gives me extra incentive to play it again when years ago, I would never play a game twice.
I also hate it when there are acheivements for a game, say single player, and there is one achievement for easy, another for medium, hard etc. I believe when I get through the Hard level that I should automatically get the easier achievements and not everygame does this and it's stupid

The other serious annoyance is when they lock difficulty levels 2 and 3 and 4 until you have completed the game on 1. GRRR!!! I would rather play it once on the most difficult level, and be done with it.

And like you said, you only get the achievments for finishing each level. 2x GRRR!!!
