From what hes says you would think that its takes years to add achievements to a game. Its simple and it adds to the game. If a gamer doesn't like them, they can ignore them.

Sounds like a developer that just doesn't like the fact that MS is asking them to add something into their game that they didnt plan on.

Personally, I've never really been huge on achievements, I can take them or leave them.  If I earn some, fine, if not, thats ok to.

I agree that they do add replayability to a game.  While generally the first time i play a game, its just for the fun of it, this gives some motivation to go back that game and try for something when I'm bored.

I do think to an extent they can put a damper on online play, but again, thats just an opinion.  I dont see the big deal.

If you like them, enjoy them.  If you dont, ignore them.  Maybe there should just be a setting to turn off the notifications of them.

I love them, and I hate them... I love that they give such good replay value to certain games(Crackdown anyone?) and I love the bragging rights, but I also hate them in certain situations(Dead Rising.) When I got Dead Rising I loved it, played the hell out of it for about a week, but then I decide to get Zombie Genocider, after about a week of playing(driving through tunnels was boring, only played about an hour a day) I stopped altogether, I picked it back up months later just to finish that achievement. Now I'm so sick of that game I'm not sure I'm ever going to actually finish the story, which sucks because I was getting interested.

1 word:
Hater.

Dont like them. ignore the achievements. Achievements adds replayability to a game. This guy does not know the meaning of being a gamer.

I think they're great for bragging rights, and lately I like using them for a quick history of who in forums spends more times on forums, and who spends more time actually playing.  And if it wasn'tfor achievements I woulda been bored w/ crackdown after killing off that Egnimatic Wang.

I personally think achievements are brilliant. The do add a lot of replay value to games which would perhaps have become a bit mundane. What they also do is make you strive to do things in a game that you wouldn't normally have done or even thought of doing. I mean what is he talking about, "was it really necessary for us to go back to the old 'High Score' system from the days of arcade games?", this statement is stupid, I mean how many people out there play Forza time trials to death to be better than their mates? A lot! Competition keeps the gaming community going, otherwise it'd just be boring. Achievements rule.

I  like the idea of the achievements system, to see how far you've gotten in games and able to compare it to others, and bragging about something is just part of human life really. I just play the games, if i get the achievements then its a bonus, i dont go out 'collecting' them to show off.

You're only against achievements if you have a tiny gamerscore.

ha ha, that's what i thought to myself - Raphael Van Lierop must not have any achievement points.

anyways, i am indifferent - i neither like nor hate them.  i don't have any because i have only played H2 and H3 Beta on my 360 and a few XBLA games, but for those that enjoy them i think they are great.

and at my age and in my profession, i have very very few gaming friends to "compare" my achievements with...

This guy is missing the WHOLE point of gaming. Gaming is about competition ! Look at the online gaming, what is that all about ? Competition ! Because to compete is fun !

that is a very narrow view of the purpose of gaming and may be your belief but gaming means different things to many - competition is one, pleasure/relaxation/enjoyment another, community (both online and local social unity) another, etc.

jester.gif BOY THIS ARTICLE IS FULL OF IT.  tongue.gif  mad.gif

Achievements are amazing, plus it really REALLY good way from MS to differentiate their online services/games from other consoles. PLus think of the replay value if you only goal isn't just to beat the game... but rather beat the game using different techniques (listed in the achievements)

High Score... those already exist.... LEADERBOARDS...

plus high score boards are SO SO STUPID by todays standards.... WHO CARES.. if your 13,113,132 out of 50,000,000... doesn't give me any sort of accomplishment. And still it doesn't mean that the people on TOP are good, just that they have no life and play all day, everyday.

WHile achievements give you instant gradification for completing different things in the game. And not just HOW WELL YOU PLAY OVERALL or HOW MANY MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ARE BETTER (OR PLAY MORE) THAN ME. jester.gif

sounds like a wii/ps3 fan boy wrote this article.

Love them or hate them, those Xbox 360 achievements have become a staple of the system. The little blips of joy are so annoying and addicting for some that we're shocked the PS3 and/or Wii didn't implement them. There's an interesting thread going on over at the International Game Developers Association forums started by Raphael Van Lierop (Relic, 3D Realms) where he believes the achievements have taken gamers off course.

Lierop writes, "I have many friends who LOVE achievements. They love the bragging rights, they love being able to compare achievements they obtained to other people ... Personally, I dislike them...a lot. I find they are changing the way we play games, and the focus of the games we play, and make. I feel that games should be crafted to have enough intrinsic reward, that a secondary external reward system should not be required... was it really necessary for us to go back to the old 'High Score' system from the days of arcade games? I would have hoped that the gameplay and immersiveness of the 'next gen' gaming experience would have been enough reward, and that we wouldn't have had to fall back on cheap gimmicks."

Whoever wrote that just is mad because they don't have a high gamer score! laugh.gif  laugh.gif
