Game developers debate Xbox achievements

Love them or hate them, those Xbox 360 achievements have become a staple of the system. The little blips of joy are so annoying and addicting for some that we're shocked the PS3 and/or Wii didn't implement them. There's an interesting thread going on over at the International Game Developers Association forums started by Raphael Van Lierop (Relic, 3D Realms) where he believes the achievements have taken gamers off course.

Lierop writes, "I have many friends who LOVE achievements. They love the bragging rights, they love being able to compare achievements they obtained to other people ... Personally, I dislike them...a lot. I find they are changing the way we play games, and the focus of the games we play, and make. I feel that games should be crafted to have enough intrinsic reward, that a secondary external reward system should not be required... was it really necessary for us to go back to the old 'High Score' system from the days of arcade games? I would have hoped that the gameplay and immersiveness of the 'next gen' gaming experience would have been enough reward, and that we wouldn't have had to fall back on cheap gimmicks."

Honestly, with achievements, it's just another boasting thing.  For some people, beating the game is enough.  Why do they have to worry about achievements? You don't get anything extra from completing them other than bragging right.

It was fun getting them at first but I'm kind of sick of them now myself. It does add replayability to games but too many people only worry about getting achievements when playing online games like GOW which makes teamwork suffer. It does help make M$ money from gamerscore whores who buy xbla games for 200 more gamerscore so they got what they wanted out of it biggrin.gif

What they need to do is make the gamerpoints translate into market points. Then they'd actually be worth it.

I kinda see there point but I think they are off. Sure there are now some people who play the game just for the acheivements and completely overlook the time and effort the developers put into the game. However I think acheivements only make sales better and if you were going to buy the game and play it regardless of acheivements then acheivements have changed nothing for those people.

youve almost proved Mr. Lierop right with that statement.  While I agree that more people finish games no due to wanting the achievements... that right there, in some cases, goes to show the quality of they games we're playing.  We shouldn't need that "level two" incentive to want to finish a game completely but in some cases(as tribalnoise stated above me) it does keep that certain level of competition.

it's an interesting viewpoint that has strong points on both sides.

Absolutely its about bragging rights. I wish there was some way to actually SHOW people I beat Ninja Gaiden (on normal, but still, im proud of it). As for saying its 'sad' that they have resorted to the gimmicky high-score setup... well, what can I really say? Highscore HAS been around for so long, I miss it when its not there!

You're only against achievements if you have a tiny gamerscore.

It's okay, it's not the size of your gamerscore that counts (Just keep telling yourself that)

I think they are a great idea, because it adds a lot of re-playability to the games + there are people who will simply pay for a game to boost their gamescore, making Microsoft win. In my opinion I like them, they challenge you to push yourself harder and reach a milestone while playing games. Some are just seriously stupid or ridiculous for example (Seriously... 10,000 kill in Gears of War) shit like that its just retarded, but some of them can push you to go for that milestone for example (Kick the Bucket Award... Beat Jordan on Expert in Guitar Hero II)

Some are good, some are bad, but they are here to stay. smile.gif

I don't see what's wrong with achievements, since they get more people to play the games. Sure, some people don't like them, mostly because they can't get all the achievements they want, but that doesn't mean they should remove the system. Lierop doesn't realize the simple fact that people aren't playing the games for the achievements, it's just an addon to the games which makes them even more interresting (Van Lierop's just pissed off because he didn't think of achievements first). Wonder if Lierop considers force feedback to be a "cheap gimmick" too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
